OK, this was explained to me once (by a physician) but I can't remember the particulars. In short, when I bend my first, index and ring finger on my right hand, they tend to "stick" in place. The index finger can stick almost solid until I pull it straight and it "clicks" loose.

The physician explained to me that the tendon went through some kind of sheath. So I want to know what the tendon and the sheath are called. Rest and anti-inflammatories work well to stop it... I just want to remember what the affected parts are called.

Trigger finger???

flexor tendon and its sheath...

Yup. Sounds like trigger finger. Info here:

A rare complication of the bite of the deadly trigger fish. :eek:verlord:

It's a trigger finger and it can hurt like heck. You develop a nodule on the tendon that catches on a little sheath that guides the tendon through the joint - it's much like carpal tunnel syndrome in your fingers instead of your wrist. Mine got so bad that I was having to pull my ring and middle finger open - I couldn't get them to open on their own. Youch.

In my case, the doc told me that he'd start with a big shot of steroidal something-or-other into the sheath that is locking up (stings) and if that didn't work he'd have to cut my hand to slice the sheath open. The shot has helped a lot, although there is still a perceptable "click" when the joint goes from full flexion to extension. The pain is gone, at least. The doc says that the shot will probably have to be repeated periodically.

This getting old stuff sux.
