The owner of my LDS called & told me they had a spot open on a friends private boat & they were going #s hunting & of course I was game.
We had a beautiful start although it was quite foggy, but with calm winds. We thought it would be a smooth ride, boy were we wrong. This was Sat. Dec.30
Once we cleared Chesapeake Bay we hit steady 4-6 footers & close together, with the occasional set of 8 footers and being in a 28ft boat we cut our plans for the new #s as we still had 20+ miles to go & hit a site they already knew. The Belle sitting in 55 feet was the call. I was buddied up with the boat owner & the LDS owner was with the other diver. Since we had no one to stay with the boat we did 2 team divers. This was my 1st dive on this site.
When they were down we could tell by the bubbles they were not venturing far from the anchor & when they hit the surface they reported limited vis of 5-8 feet & little to no sealife. We decided to splash anyway, I was anxious to try out my new light in someplace other than the pool. The vis wasnt that bad at least 10ft LOL. We saw lots of Sea Bass tho none big enough to shoot & we covered the whole site from stern to bow & back. Water temp was 53%.
Our 2nd site was The Schooner also another 1st for me, but this time my buddy had not been there either & the other pair decided we should be the 1st to splash & scout the site. It sits in 110 feet. As we were trying to hook wreck we got a Bass pot that fouled the line. I was picked to gear up & go fix the problem, not sure how, but hey im always willing to get wet. Once that was taken care of the next drop hooked the wreck.
We jumped & found lots of particle material in the water, great another limited vis dive, but such is the life of a Va. Beach diver. If you enjoy diving around here you probably love diving in general with good vis & warm water being a bonus when having it.
We hit bottom & found 20ft vis, Cool, there were lots of fish on this wreck,Seabass, Tautog, Cod & some big Eels they said Conger Eels. We were after Lobster & found 4, but they were small & we let them go, then we spotted a large 1 & got him, but upon returning to the boat it was not as big as we thought & released him also. Water temp was up to 54%.
All in all a good day of diving in the Mid-Atlantic even tho the 1st dive was off the Eastern Shore further north than I normally go. My new light, a Green Force 100 watt Hi-Impact head with imbilacal & a Flex3 battery, worked great & made the limited vis a little bit easier to deal with.
