After many disappointments with Deltas and the like, we finally bought our 6 new pack dive boat.

It is a 1988 Tollycraft 34 sports sedan.

In investigating insurance, we contacted Great Lakes Charters. They use St. Pauls which is expensive in general. We're still looking for dive boat insurance and have settled in the mean time for regular Progressive boat insurance until we start chartering in the spring.

So, really who else is there besides V&B and Witherspoon since we don't like Great Lakes?

Tortuga James, What kind of boat and how many guys do you take out? I use Charter Lakes (St. Paul's) and am paying $7k on my 2008 36' newton for 20 divers and a $1,000,000 in liability. Most of that ($4.5k) is for the agreed hull value ($265k) which is high.

I am a six pack, 1M in liability and $80k in boat value with a $5k in deductible for hull and property. Coverage is for divers on the boat and ladder only, in the water I am not covered, that is where my V&B coverage and my liability release form come into play. I intentionally agreed to self insure for property with the value of the boat and the deductible to make sure I was covered for liability. The boat has no liens.

I am also using V&B for in water coverage. I was none too impressed with their terms to do the whole shebang though. They wanted more money but basically said I could use the boat and be covered when I was out for fun. Specifically I wasn't allowed to take her outside the COI for pleasure nor was alcohol ever allowed onboard.... since I don't drink not a big deal but my buddies do and one of the pleasures of owning my boat is taking my friends and family out for fun.

I went down that road with V&B as well and came up with the same impression. They wouldn't take a 2 year old survey and wanted me to pay to haul and have a new survey. That is when my shopping else where heated up.

If thet is Great Lakes DIVE Charters, Capt Frank only insures from May through Sept after that it is insured as storage.

It makes no sense to insure for more than they will pay. BOOK VALUE IS ALL YOU WILL GET IN A LOSS. New a logger, had an old trailer completely refitted with stainless steel inside so the wood chips would not hang up. When it rolled over into a ravine they only got the $8000 book even though they had insurance for $30,000.

They will take your money and insure it for whatever you say but will only pay off on book value.

I just checked my notes. St. Paul was about $900 for a May to Dec policy.
$40k boat value, 1 million liability
