My father dives in AR on occassion. I have a lease about an hour and a half west of you. I hear some of the lakes in Arkansas are great for diving.

As for the gear... Well, it's been said enough. I just got to a point where the only piece I have to rent is a tank, which makes sense to me in my situation. Next up, equiping the wife...

First off, good for you, Nicko32. I think all divers should own their own gear, the sooner the better. And second, all these sarcastic comments about you never acquire all your gear are absolutely true! It's part of the joy/curse of the active ( read hard core) diver to accessorize, upgrade, expand, and innovate with every new thing. Happy diving and shopping!

Finally accquired all my gear!

The correct number of pieces of gear to own is N+1, where N is the number of pieces of gear you currently own.

You're not accounting for pieces of gear you are currently selling, gear the wife wants you to get rid of, or gear you needlessly own in triplicate.

3N - 2N + 1

This is wrong! A wife in the equation should render the equation as: !(3N-2N+1)

If you are married, the equation for the correct amount of gear to own is S-1, where S is the number of pieces of gear that cause your spouse to leave you.

Okay - here's a question for everyone, what's the fastest you've replace an item of equipment with something else?

For me it was my BC - had it for 10 dives (4 weeks) and decided I should have brought that wing after all and so did :)

Yeah, the Balance BCD I bought right after OW went on EBay after 5 dives... replaced with a BP/W.

Drysuits look so tempting!!!!!!

It isn't a badge of honor, but a source of embarrassment, for me to say I can beat that.
As a new diver in the 90s I really liked the Seatec Manta BC that the California chain Sport Chalet rented. In the late 90s I jumped at an opportunity to buy a different soft backpack BC, the Tusa Imprex. I was in love with my first BC after one pool dive and its first three ocean dives, but when I went on some boat dives I started seeing big weaknesses - the worst of which was how much it would ride up on me when I was on the surface. At that time I was hearing a lot about backplates and wings, and after a grand total of eight dives - one pool and seven in the ocean - I bought a backplate and wing.

And how long did that last? Two dives later I bought a second wing! The first wing is great for cold water and a lot of weight, but in warm water it is just too big so I bought a small travel wing.
