i have the carbon 42 it is a nice easy breather and yes you can dive nitrox out of the box nitrox to 40% as is the case with the abyss but if you want a small reg the mares proton metal is smaller than the carbon 42 about 50 grams more weight cost about 1/3 less both are good cold water regs as is the abyss. the proton at one time was marketed as a proton extream ice with the older v32 first stage. the new proton metal comes with the mr42 and a cold water kit can be added. where in canada do you dive.

C'mon now, didn't even mention APEKs in your post...looks like you need to do some more research :)

Apex are def part of the options process. Actually leaning more towards the Apex series now...just narrowing options now:)

Tina, have you looked at the Zeagle regs?/ they are a real work horse, warm or coldwater.

Hey Tina,

Personally I dive the old school SCUBAPRO MK10/ Balanced Adjustable, and love an all metal regulator. The new A700 is a phenomenal regulator, and paired with a MK17, it cannot be beat for cold water.

Having been trained by all the major manufacturers as a repair technician... anything from the Apeks, Aqualung, Scubapro or Sherwood Lines are solid regulators. Mares Regulators are majorly overpriced, considering that they DO NOT have a balanced second stage, even though they have a $1000 regulator. Oceanic/Aeris Regulators are solid reg's but parts for rebuilding them are expensive.

If you want high performance go with Apeks or Scubapro, if you want a bulletproof reg get a Sherwood Blizzard.

Just my 2cents

more people perfer to uas a scuba pro, but there is nothing wrong with the mares line.

good regs and are very dependable at depth and in the cold. which ever way you go it will be a good choice
