Anyone have any cool ideas for keeping fin straps from catching on kelp? I'm thinking of just tieing them off using cable/zip ties.

Um... Spring Straps? :) Depending on what fin you have, those buckle assemblies are a real pain in the butt. I admittedly don't have a lot of experience with Kelp, but I know when I was diving Mares Quattro's that those buckles were an absolute sea-weed magnet. I went to Spring Straps, and while nothing is perfect, they were awfully darn close.

Jim,

Switch to spring straps and you won't have these problems. You'll also be able to get you fins on/off a lot quicker, which will make the beach & surf entries we do more enjoyable.

You can make them yourself, but it will still run you about $20-25 for the first set + your time.

spring straps, electrical tape, mount the straps "inside-out", replace with bungees...

I went to Lowe's the other day and noticed they had the stainless steel spring strap springs in stock for about $6 each.

Cool. Thanks guys. Never heard of spring straps before.

Jim possibly the greatest invention since sliced bread...why didnt someone come up with this before!I got some a while back and absolutely love them! Money well spent!!

What fins are you using?

Way back in the '70s when I started scuba (in Long Beach, CA) threading the fin straps from outside in was taught in the open water class.
Today, some fins make this impossible.

A generally better solution is spring straps, see;

:D

Also a search on 'spring straps' will turn up several other threads.

Thanks guys. Just ordered some spring straps from Scuba.com. Made by Innovative Scuba Concepts. Only problem is they sell them in S, M, L, and XL, but no indication of what size to get. And I can't even find them on the Innovative website. So I got the mediums. We'll see...

They plug right into the quick releases of my Sherwood Trek fins. Pretty cool.

Total cost for two: $50 (including shipping & taxes). Yikes.

Ummm they did, they were invented by Farallon back in the late '60s.
Backplates are another "new" invention that have been around since the late '50s, early '60s. :D
We got around the kelp/weed problem by simply using Duck Feet. No straps as such to foul or break. :crafty:
