I have color corrected footage with and without the red filter. Without the filter still does a great job of cleaning up the footage and making it look worth watching but can't bring back the colors anywhere close to what can be achieved by using a filter. A lot of my friends asked be about this too so I made a quick tutorial. Sounds like you know the CC end of it but maybe this comparison of with/without filter could give you an idea of the drastic difference:
