I can't possibly say enough good things about Garden Island Resort on the amazing island of Taveuni. Although we arrived there just two weeks after the island was devastated by a category 4 cyclone,:shocked2: the resort was all cleaned up and fully operational. I couldn't believe my eyes...especially after I learned that just a few days before the swimming pool had been filled with sand! There was no evidence of the destruction by the time we arrived...the pool looked brand new and very inviting! :cool2:

We were greeted by a lovely welcome song and escorted to our room, which we were VERY happy with. Our first impression was that the room was so nice and cool...a very welcome adjustment after the past week. Our room was very comfortable. There was a nice king-sized bed as well as a sofa looking out through the wall of windows and sliding glass door to the balcony. We were situated right near the water's edge and had a fabulous view of the Somosomo Strait, home of the famous "Rainbow Reef" we were so eager to dive. The room was also equipped with an electric kettle and plenty of coffee, tea, etc. and a refrigerator (with a bottle of Fiji water!) which really made life convenient.

The food at Garden Island Resort was very good and we enjoyed everything we tried. Fortunately we had the opportunity to meet the chef and extend our compliments before the end of our visit. They even prepared a "surprise" birthday cake for my husband and the Garden Island Resort band sang to him as the staff brought it out. It was really kind of them...above and beyond the call of duty, but the cake was delicious! :D:D:D

The resort grounds were lovely, with chaise lounges and hammocks around the swimming pool. It was a great place to relax and visit with all of our new friends when we weren't diving.

Did I mention diving??? Garden Island Resort has one of the best dive operations I have ever seen. I have traveled to a number of dive locations around the world and I can honestly say that the dive boats at Garden Island Resort are the best I've ever experienced. They are intelligently constructed to accomodate extra dive tanks and provide additonal space. The seats are wider, allowing room for a slanted tank rack under the seats to keep those spare tanks stowed out of the way. Plus you have plenty of room to gear up on the nice wide bench seats. There's plenty of extra space to allow movement around the boat, plus the dive platform and ladders were just right. I was very comfortable diving the entire week. The boat crews are the best and have an uncanny knack for knowing exactly what the current is doing at all times and what it will be doing by the end of the dive. I was very impressed. The only complaint I had (is this a complaint???) was that they handled my equipment from start to finish...I'm not used to that. I'm usually very hands on and take care of my own gear, but honestly it was pretty nice to be spoiled for the week - it was like valet diving :cool2:

The dive sites were beyond my wildest imagination. On our VERY FIRST DIVE, our divemaster Hyram said "Well, the way the current is going to be running this afternoon, I think it would be best to go ahead and make our first dive at The Great White Wall". This was a dream come true! I have read about this dive site for a long time and couldn't wait to see it for myself, and it did not disappoint. Besides the wall itself we saw numerous interesting critters, including a sea snake, an octopus and a white-tipped shark! The fish life was absolutely amazing - brilliant colored fish were everywhere! We kind of expected that reef life would be at a minimum after the storm, but that was not the case at all. We saw numerous snakes, sharks and even a turtle during our week of diving. I was blown away by the colors and magnitude of soft corals on the Rainbow Reef...guess that's how it got its name, huh ;)

To sum it up, I would HIGHLY recommend Garden Island Resort for any diver's "bucket list". The diving is fabulous, the resort is exactly what I hoped for, and the staff are the most incredibly loving and generous people I could ever imagine meeting. I was sobbing as they sang their touching goodbye song to us on departure. :depressed: My prediction came true...this was the place I was afraid I would not want to come home from. These people and this place will be forever engrained in my memory. I only hope that we will be able to return some day to see them all again.

Sounds like y'all had a blast! Great pics!

I'm currently planning a dive trip with 1 week in Pacific Harbour area and 1 week in Taveuni-- and am trying to decide between Garden Island Resort and Maravu Plantation...Thank you for the great trip report! and pics ; )

My first criteria was diving...we wanted to dive the Rainbow Reef and The Great White Wall in particular. Garden Island Resort is RIGHT THERE. It is the closest resort to all the best dive sites.

Unfortunately, price was also a definite consideration for us. Garden Island Resort is the most reasonably priced resort there, yet they met and exceeded all of our expectations. :D

A few questions for you -
I know Garden Island resort used to be an all-inclusive, but now isn't.... how did you find the meal prices? Did you eat there every meal or go elsewhere?
How was the baggage issue coming from Nadi. I had heard stories about carry-ons being weighed and people getting charged for camera gear bags, etc.
How many dives per day? Night dives at all? Shore dives?
How was the current? I have heard (Taveuni diving) some days it is so strong it is hard to get back to boat. Did you have any issues? Our LDS did a trip there about 10yrs ago and several people were unhappy with the current and said they wouldn't go back there, although they thought the diving was spectacular. I am not sure how to take their comments as I have never dove with them.

We are seriously considering Fiji for a trip next year and we had it narrowed down to Beqa resort or Wananavu... you have definitely put Garden Island resort back on the maybe list. :D Any more info you can share??

Robin, I would be happy to share any info you are interested in. Feel free to ask any questions you like.

Meal price was $ 55/day per person. This included a two course lunch and a three course dinner. (Breakfast was included) You don't have to buy the meal plan...you can order a la carte and get only what you want. They even make pizzas if you would prefer that. There is a small restaurant next door, but I don't think their hours work for lunch because of the diving, although on some days you might get back early enough. Not sure about their dinner service. It was just much easier for us to purchase the meal plan and figure it into the cost of our trip.

The baggage from Nadi is a joke. Supposedly if you are transferring from Air Pacific, you are allowed the same luggage allowance as on the big planes. But if you fly any other airline or check in for a domestic commuter flight you are limited to 1 bag at 33 lbs. and one carry-on at approx. 15 lbs. Yes, they do weigh you with your carry-on before you board the plane. But this is because they are very careful about weight distribution on the aircraft...it just goes with the territory. That being said, when we checked in for our domestic flight connecting to Taveuni, the agent on duty did not charge us anything for our luggage...at all. He did weigh us, but then just sent our bags through and didn't say anything else about it. On the flight back from Taveuni to Nadi, we paid for everything over 33 lbs. each. It is very much done on "island time" and you never know what you're gonna get ;)

Most packages are set up for two 3 tank dives and three 2 tank dives per week. Night dives are extra, but are available. You can also request 3 tanks any day for an additional fee if at least four divers participate.

The current on the Rainbow Reef can be challenging at times. We had read stories as well and were somewhat concerned since we're not "spring chickens"! I am not sure about other dive shops on Taveuni, but I can tell you that the boat crews at Garden Island Resort are absolutely brilliant when it comes to the current. They know EXACTLY what the current is doing a)at the beginning of the dive b)what it will be doing by the end of the dive c)what it will be doing later in the day d)which direction it is flowing...and on and on and on! Their briefings were excellent and all you had to do was follow them and do as they said. There is no worry about getting back to the boat...the boat comes to you. We usually did our 3 minute safety stop hanging onto something (wear gloves and don't grab onto any coral!), then after the time was up we'd let go and drift to the surface and the boat would come and pick us up.

My priority for this dive trip was soft coral, and the Rainbow Reef is absolutely beautiful. Since we did Wananavu first, I can tell you that the current is just as much of an issue there. In additon, it's about an hour plus boat ride out to the beautiful sites and your surface interval is done on a rocking boat...bad for seasick people like me! I am told that Bega Lagoon is good, but better for sharks and critters than soft coral. (One of the couples we dove with had just come from there) So it really boils down to what your priorities are.

Having read many of your posts on the Roatan forum I am inclined to think you would truly love the Rainbow Reef. Color abounds, the reef is incredibly diverse and the photography opportunities are amazing! Is there any way you could do a two week trip and split it up like we did? Then you could experience two different places and see some variety. But no matter what, don't pass up the opportunity to visit and dive Fiji. The experience has truly changed me and I hope to go back again and again :D:D:D

thanks, that really does help alot!! :D:D:D

We keep debating where our next dive destination should be.... Ron says it has to be Pacific, so we are exploring all options. Your description of Garden Island resort sounds very tempting! And since you got to do Wananavu (the place that was sitting in number 1 spot on our wish list), you may have changed our minds!

Our 2011 trip options are:
Philippines (so many great recs on Puerta Galera but a friend who is living there now says it is not even close to Palau or Fiji), or go to Palau again but land-based this time (Palau is so amazing, we know we are guaranteed fabulous diving there but it is expensive), or Fiji (Wananavu or Garden Island). We really want to go to Indonesia but the airfare costs and extra days travel both ways has us discouraged.

I am not a huge fan of blasting current. In Palau they use reef hooks on many dives, so you can hold still and watch the sharks, etc. but that even got old after awhile. The reefs there are spectacular, healthiest I have ever seen, and big and little fish of every kind as well as mantas and sharks. I would much rather go someplace with milder currents, where I can poke around and relax but I know that current=soft coral and color.... so it is a trade off. Just not sure exactly how much is good and how much is uncomfortable. (we had one dive in Palau that the current was so strong that one of the DMs had to grab and hold onto me till we could get to boat. It was rip-the-mask-off-your-face current!)

I am glad to hear that you think the dive staff at Garden Island Resort is so good at managing the current issues. I was very happy with our Palau liveaboard staff for the same reason - when we were doing a site with mad current, they put all 4 DMs in water with us (12-15 divers). It really made everyone feel more comfortable as one of them was always there to watch and keep everyone safe. :D How many DMs does Garden Island have in water each dive, just one leading?

Hey Robin. My wife and I are making the same decisions that you are attempting. We went to Fiji about 7 years ago and stayed at Matangi Island. The DM's were also great at understanding the tides (current) and many of our dives were very relaxed with no current at all. Most of the diving was at slack tides. We did White Wall and Yellow Wall as well as others within sight of Taveuni. Fiji is probably in our top 3 dive locations we done so far.

My wife really wants to do Palau next year but I just don't like fighting the current all the time. I worked at Truk Lagoon (zero current) for a while and we went to Yap instead of Palau when I was leaving. It was great with ripping current on every dive. The manta's were even more interesting than we expected.

You mentioned Indonesia and I can't recommend it highly enough. Yes the travel is a hassle especially to Raja Ampat. We did the Komodo Dancer and that was a relatively easy trip to Bali which is an awesome place to visit for a couple of days. We see a lot of reviews talking about the current around Raja Ampat but we only had 2 or 3 dives with current out of 11 days on another liveaboard. We stopped in Manado for a few days and dove Lembeh which has zero current and the strangest critters you've ever dreamed about. I don't think it's any more trouble to get to Bali than Palau and it's less expensive.

Since Palau is so expensive (air fare) we may have to skip a trip this year so we can get there next year. Roatan is always and option but the diving seems to be going down hill from many reports and it alwasy seems to cost more than we expect.

Good luck with your decision.
