Hello all,
I am pretty new to this board. I am trying to find a resort in Fiji that would be suitable for me and my wife, who is mildly handicapped. I will list some of the things we are looking for, and maybe get some suggestions.

My wife has multiple sclerosis, and while she can walk, she has trouble walking up and down hills, over lots of stairs, long distances, etc. A hundred or two yards are fine, provided they are relatively flat. A few small staircases are also okay, but not more than about 15 steps at a time, for example. We are not looking for a handicapped accessible resort (i.e., one that is appropriate for wheelchairs), because she is not in a wheelchair. Also, it is fine if the resort is on a hillside, provided that there are rooms close to the shore, along with access to a restaurant, bar, and other requirements also close to shore. A lot of the resorts appear to be on hills or spread out, based on their web sites, so it is difficult for me to see if they would be appropriate for us. Also, we prefer a resort that is relatively close to the dive sites (say less than 30 minutes on average). Price is not too big a factor. It is great if it is a luxurious resort and expensive, or a simple resort and less expensive. My wife is fine in the water; she is a strong swimmer and diver, and has very good endurance. So nothing special is required in the way for us with respect to the diving. I know some places in Fiji have strong currents. We can handle medium currents fine (we've been to Cozumel and Wakatobi, for example). We have not been to anyplace with really strong currents though, so probably we would want a location that has some moderately easy dive site options.

That is about it. Any ideas and suggestions are appreciated.

If you go to Beqa, it will be a 2 hour bus ride from Nadi.
Once you get to Pacific harbor, you will cross the lagoon by boat...
approx 45 min boat ride, to Beqa Lagoon resort.

The resort is spread out, but the farthest bure (away from the main bure) is not a very far walk, probably under 200 yards, I'm sure you could request one of the bures right by the main bure. The lagoon is fairly sheltered, so it is usually pretty calm diving.

When you go to and from the dive boat, you are usually taken by a small boat from shore to the dive boat. It is a little bit of a walk during low tide though. That's probably the biggest complication...you probably won't be able to hike to the waterfall, which is about a 1 hour hike one way.

They are definitely not handicapped accessible, but you stated that's not the case.
From what you described, I think BLR might work for you and your wife.
It is a GREAT place which I highly reccommend...
Good luck with your decision,
Bill

P.S.-if you go, be sure to request to do the shark dive with Beqa Adventure Divers. It's incredible

Thanks everyone. I had looked at Beqa Lagoon Resort, and thought that it might be a possibility. From what has been said, it sounds like a good bet. If any other ideas come to mind, please let me know. I had been thinking of Wananavu, Vatulele, and was also interested in a resort on Taveuni, if any were appropriate, too. Any other ideas are certainly welcome, too.

I wouldn't recommend Wananavu as the resort is on hillside and lots of walking up and down. The current at Bligh Water is also considered strong.
Garden Island Resort on Taveuni is supposed to be okay and only 2 levels, but once again, I have heard current there is strong. I know a few people who have been there and thought the current was downright scary.

HI and best of luck with your search.

We were in Taveuni Dec 2007...we didn't experience extreme currents, but I give the dive op credit for that...they choose sites carefully based on relative experience levels, weather and tides...we did avoid a few sites during the couple of days on either side of the full moon when the tidal change was greatest...My wife and I are relatively experienced, but there were also 2 young (teen) students on the boat...IMHO they did a great job finding great diving for groups of mixed ability every day...I'd suggest that you'll find the diving there very 'doable', esp if you chat to the operator about any special needs. BTW, we dove with Vunibokoi Divers...of course, your mileage may vary with other operators...
