If you mean Fiji in the South Pacific, consider Wananavu Beach Resort and diving with Kai Viti Divers - you won't be disappointed. Google both for particulars.

Fiji was beautiful. Yes it's worth it. I live in Boston, so I can understand your apprehension about traveling 8,000 miles.

I did my diving with Kai Viti Divers. They run like a Swiss watch. The diving is superb. The boats aren't too crowded. Wananavu is a very nice resort. They were booked when I visitied (I stayed at the Rakiraki hotel). I did my diving here for two main reasons. First, I wanted to dive the Bligh waters. If this is your first Indo-Pacific diving, you will be astounded. Second, I didn't want to deal with inter-island flights. Wananavu is about a 2 1/2 hour drive from Nadi. Transfers are usually arranged when you book the hotel. This is real easy.

When you get back to LA, stay overnight. All flights coming back from Fiji are red-eye flights. The last thing you want are two overnight flights.

Fiji is absolutely worth the trip. And, it's perfect for an anniversary. There are quite a few resorts in or slightly above your price range. I recommend the island of Taveuni. You will have to take a small plane from Nadi to get there (and pay the excess baggage fee), but the diving and the island are spectacular.

There are many dive operators in Fiji. We went with Swiss Fiji Divers and Jewel Bubble Divers in Taveuni and they were both good. Swiss Fiji is a bigger operation and a little more rigid. Jewel was a Fijian run operation, more flexible, but good service (the boat left a bit to be desired though - maybe they have a new one).

Have a great anniversary!

personally... as someone that can be there in 3hrs.... i would choose Vanuatu over fiji

but im sure you will love either... they are both beautiful

Personally from the east coast of Austrlia, I still vote Fiji narrowly ahead of Vanuatu (been to Van 4 times; Fiji about a dozen times. The soft corals and general colour in Fiji is better and I also prefer the fijian culture. My pick of Fiji would be Beqa Lagoon Resort; followed by Naigani (great diving) and Wananavu. All are good options.

It is difficult for anyone else to assess whether flying to Fiji would be worth it to you and your husband. We don't know much about your standards re: travel or diving. For me, Fiji was a nice experience... enjoyed the country, the people (very nice) and the diving. I dove twice off Nadi shortly after I arrived (my gills were dry after being landlocked in New Zealand the previous 10 days) and then spent about a week diving at the Cousteau resort. My only regret? That I didn't have an UW camera with me.

I hear Fiji described as technicolor!

I just got back from Fiji, two days ago. I highly recommend it. The diving is magnificent and yes, the corals are simply amazing. The strong current that runs through the waters, there, ensure the corals open up to feed, and therefore are more colorful and bright than you can imagine.

I concur that Wananavu is a wonderful place to stay. Very friendly people, very accomodating. Unfortunately, due to rough weather (a cyclone hanging over the islands), we were unable to dive with Kai Viti. However, we plan to return, later, to do just that.

I've started a trip report, if you want to look at it: http://www.scubaboard.com/showthread.php?t=184711
