Fiji: Beqa Lagoon Resort or Kulu bay??

I have read some reports on Beqa Lagoon Resort and one on Kulu bay.

Me and my son have done about 30+ dives at various places like California, Belize and Roatan. We like to have a laid back resort with good shore diving. We prefer smaller dive groups (6-8 people). Also we like to dive with a dive master as we get to see a lot more.

As for the accommodations, we like a bit upscale digs with clean bathrooms and A/C. We are not picky eaters but we don't eat red meat (chicken is ok). We also like to do some shore activities like hiking, visiting villages etc.

Which resort would be a good fit for us?

I did Beqa in 2005. Fabulous resort, very comfortable, great food. Mostly easy dives, a little current at the end of the week. Dove with at least 2 DM's in water, boat usually went out with 10 - 14 divers. I didn't do any shore diving.

You just described Beqa Lagoon.

I and my two sons and wife are going back in about 2 weeks. The resort has a great house reef just out the door from your room. The food is great. It is the only resort I have been to where the guests take pictures of the food. Choice of fish or other meat at every meal.

We were there in Sept of 2006 and had a relaxed time. Could not wait to go back, Too much to see with so little time.

The house reef has a lot of life and both hard and soft corals. They have unlimited shore diving day and night. Two boat dives in the morning with easy dives. Also a good large wreck dive. Only had current one day, but not bad for new divers.

In Sept we only had 4-6 divers on one boat. The other 2 boats did not need to be used. We had surfers, deep sea fishers, and honeymooners there so the dives were not crowded and very relaxed.

I wouldn't call the house reef at Beqa "great" but it was very worthwhile. It doesn't compare to the boat dives, but I did do 6 dives on it the week I was there. Makes a good easy night dive. I saw a couple of spotted snake eels there at night, a small lion fish in the day, a couple of types of lobster, a small moray, schools of goat fish, scads of other small fish.

Food there shouldn't be a problem for you.

I think the island peaks at something like 1400 feet, and there is a waterfall to which to hike. A visit to the adjacent village is a standard activity.

We just returned from Beqa Lagoon Resort 1 week ago and yes, you described the resort in what you said you were looking for. You siad you are not picky eaters, but the food is to die foe and fish was offered at every lunch and dinner. I agree the shore dive was good, but not great. Some dives in the Lagoon can have quite a bit of current so tell the dive masters you have less then 50 dives and they will find sites with less or no current, and they are there.

I highly recommend this resort! Have a wonderful time!

BLR is a great dive resort and I'm taking another group of over 40 back there this year in July! I've done an article in "Sportdiving" magazine on Beqa and it will apear June/July. I've read very conflicting reports about Kulu Bay - some love it some hate it! It is in a great location but on the south side of the island and is shadier and cooler. Some complained about food - but again others loved it! At Beqa, everyon e loved everything!

Its the best dive trip I've ever run ( and no I'm not an agent!)
