The Festival of Whales runs this weekend and next. Fun, fun, fun, and FREE! (But bring $$ for goodies!)

Also, I found out yesterday about a renowned marine ecologist who will be visiting Dana Point's Festival of Whales on March 13th and speaking about his new book: Heal the Ocean: Solutions for Saving Our Seas.

Upbeat and inspiring, Heal the Ocean provides a guided tour of ocean environments and describes not only the threats to our seas including overfishing, pollution, deep-sea mining and the search for new energy sources, but also the efforts that have successfully protected and restored endangered marine ecosystems.

What: Meet Dr. Rod Fujita, author of Heal the Ocean
When: Saturday, March 13 at 1pm.
Where: Ocean Institute, 24200 Dana Point Harbor Dr., Dana Point, CA
Cost: $5 adult/ $3 children (admission to Ocean Institute)

Visit the Ocean Institute online for more information and directions.

Since 1988, Dr. Rod Fujita has worked on a wide variety of issues that impact the protection of marine ecosystems. Dr. Fujita leads Environmental Defense's efforts to create sustainable fisheries along the Pacific coast of the U.S. He is currently working to stop overfishing, to transform failing fisheries into profitable ones, and to create networks of marine reserves that protect marine biodiversity and ecosystem health. He played a lead role in establishing the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, worked to establish one of the world's first networks of marine reserves around California's Channel Islands, and helped develop the Monterey Bay Aquarium's exhibition Fishing for Solutions. In 2000, Dr. Fujita was awarded a Pew Fellowship in Marine Conservation to explore emerging issues in marine conservation, and to write Heal the Ocean.
More info about Environmental Defense.

Just one more reason to have a great time together when we dive next week! I am going to the Dr. Rod Fujita event right after we dive Treasure Island! Anyone else??
