Southern Leyte is frequently mentioned as a desirable destination (and it is) and often dismissed due to difficult access. For future reference, be aware that the Ocean Jet fast ferry is now servicing Maasin City (and has been since September 4). The ferry is scheduled to leave Cebu pier 1 at 7 am and arrive in Maasin approximately 3 hours later. From Maasin it is about 30 minutes to Padre Burgos by private transfer. From Maasin the ferry continues to Surigao (scheduled departure 10:30) and arrives in plenty of time to catch a ferry to Siargao. The ferry leaves Surigao bound for Maasin at 1 pm, and leaves Maasin bound for Cebu at 3:30.
There have been several attempts over the years to make Maasin accessible via fast ferry and none have met with long term success. Ocean Jet is no slouch. Hopefully including Surigao in this route is the key.

There is also diving in Surigao. Caving diving, Enchanted River, with long penetration is available.
And those who are interested in surfing, Siargao Island is not very far(by ferry or plane).

Adding the info that @Parla kindly posted in another thread.

Planning our next trip and found this thread. This really makes the Cebu <=> Sogod Bay and/or < => Siargao much easier. I know most of us are dive-focused, but the last time we were in Padre Burgos we had to get to Siargao through Lipata / Liloan, which was longer and more expensive than this route would be.

If going to Siargao Island, you do have to transit from one terminal to the other dock in Surigao City (Mindanao) and make sure you timing is correct to avoid a forced overnight. Surigao City is nothing special, so try to arrive there early enough to get to the Siargao that day on the way there. And, of course, leave Siargao early on one of the five or so daily 1.5 hour ferries in order to get to either Leyte or Cebu same day. If you do have to overnight in Surigao City, I recommend Hotel Tavern.

Anyway, I hope this one lasts! Similar routes have been tried and drive up, but Ocean Jet is a major player.
