SkyChi:
Bob,
I just got my first TransPlate harness and was concerned about wear at the harness to backplate connections myself. I attached the harness as described in the assembly instructions but added softeners to the mix. A four inch piece of webbing laced thru the backplate then thru the beltslide and back thru the backplate both inside and outside of the harness webbing. It adds a sort of sacrificial (sp?) layer to each side of the webbing that can be replaced easily. It's a little tough to get them in but it can be done. Pretty anal huh? Sometimes I bees that way but I believe it will protect the webbing at these joints very well. I also might flatten the backplate outside the upper harness slot to provide more even support for the beltslide outside the plate. As it is now the the beltslide is only supported at each end and the peak in the bend of the backplate digs into the center of the sholder strap webbing. A sure enough wear point I believe. Hey, stop laughing, I can't help it if I'm a little anal and che.., er, I mean frugel.

Well it seems that Tobin has a pretty nice solution to the problem of harness wear ...

I received one of his backplates yesterday ... and although I haven't tried it in the water yet, it seems like a pretty ingenious idea. BTW - this plate's really nicely finished. I've got another TransPlate harness on the way, and when it gets here I'll hook it up to Tobin's plate and give it a test drive ... then I'll let y'all know how well it works.

But is it possible to feed the entire (doubled) piece of webbing AND inner tube through one slot? I tried briefly on one waist slot, and the inner tube kept getting caught on the slot edge. Or does it just take more effort and time?

Neil ... if you're asking will the inner tube work with the way you have to hook up a TransPlate harness, the answer is no ... I tried it.

It does work well for a standard harness though ...

Thanks, Bob. I did it with my standard harness, but it just didn't seem possible with a Transplate.

Hey Bob,
I had seen the Deep Sea Supply Website and was impressed with this feature and others. I also liked their harness hardware which uses the molded on protecters on some pieces. All of it very clean and well thought out in my view. Had I not already started piecing together my first BP/W rig I might have bought their single tank package. I ended up with the following,
DR SS Backplate, used
DR TransPlate Harness & Crotch Strap, new
Halcyon 27# Pioneer Wing, second hand but never wet
DR 32# Weight Pouches, new
DR Divers Pocket, new
DR SS Tank Straps, used
Some of it off eBay and some from mail order.
All together it cost me $470
I thought I did reasonably well. Let me drop a plug for a guy I ran across that I had not seen mentioned here. Call Dustin at White Knuckle Sports in Springville, UT., 801-489-0393. He handles DR and took good care of me.
