Originally built as the H.M.S Mistletoe, the star of Scotland was designed as a Convoy sloop of war for U Boat duty During World War 1. The Mistletoe gained distinction as she carried out her duties with great efficiency, landing fatal blows on many enemy U-Boats. After the war ended, the Mistletoe changed names and occupation frequently. She was employed as a banana freighter along the Mexican coast and later became a gambling ship operating off Ensenada and Southern California. In 1941, the vessel was anchored in Santa Monica Bay, its hull plates leaking steadily for some time. In January a large Groundswell buffeted the star's mooring. She began to leak so severely that the pumps were unable to keep the ship afloat. Early one cold morning, she sank
Today the Star of Scotland is an excellent wreck dive. Deteriorating on the Santa Monica Bay's silted bottom, she is adorned with invertebrates, anemones and nudibranchs with abound upon its beams and decks. Massive schools of large fish encircle the site. When visibility is good, the Star is one of Southern California's Best Shallow Water wrecks Dives
