I've enjoyed Bass Rocks year-round, but I've found it to be one of the more pleasant sites in the off-months provided the rocks aren't too slippery. Diving at high tide helps this quite a bit.

Bass Rocks has a great slope that is really appreciated in great vis. I've had the best luck with this in November and December.

How about the Gloucester Jettie at the light house on Eastern Point. Do they allow you to dive there in winter?

How do you dive Normans without a boat? Is there a street nearby I don't know about? Seems like a bunch of private homes.

You can get there from shore.

From Hesperus Ave. go , pass Hammond Castle, and you'll see a parking area on left w/ fence, just after #134. There is parking Space for a few cars. It's a long walk but not as bad as lot to entry point at Halibut point. When I get my gear back, would be more than happy to dive this site with you. It's a neat shore dive, esp. at high tide when you can just do giant stride off small little cliff. Easy in and out of water. I've actually seen a scallop or two where the rocks end and sand starts! Also, usually always divable in winter as winds are usually coming from North and Norman's woe is facing south.

I sent my DUI Dry suit to convert from turbo soles to Rockboots. Also, needed to replace zipper as had small annoying leak. My reg/BC is also having annual service. I hope I have my dry suit back within next two weeks.

If this is the case, you could definitely do the Poling as a shore dive! Ha ha - now that would be something.

We dove the Poling this fall. I was surprised just how close it was to shore. The guys I dive with are all life time competetive swimmers but I don't think that swim would be much fun, saddled with dive gear and dodging draggers.

back to winter shore dives...BRANT ROCK (Marshfield, MA)

Being a south shore resident, I like have found Brant Rock a nice high tide dive, lots of interesting underwater rock/boulder groupings, a variety of bottom conditions, and ease of entry are all pluses. I'd suggest it's a nice winter dive (though I am a wetsuit diver) since you can dress/undress right at you vehicle and walk into the water.

I am not sure what type of marine activity is there during the winter months however. anyone else dive there in the colder months?? During the summer there's strippers, flounder and a lot of smaller fish, crabs and a few lobsters (most larger eggers and undersized males).
