GROSSETO. Another cursed day yesterday, Saturday 22 August, in the waters of the Formiche, the islets in the middle between Marina di Grosseto, Castiglione della Pescaia and the Island of Giglio: a diver, Federico Conzales, 50 years old from Empoli in the province of Florence, he lost his life during a dive around 13.30, and attempts were made to revive him even of his companions who had gone into the water with him.
Conzales, an expert diver and not new to dives of the kind even at depths of around 100 meters, had left in the morning with the diving Santa Liberata in Orbetello, and had taken a celebratory photo together with the other members of the quartet who had decided to go to the Ants to enjoy a day of diving, with a practically perfect marine weather and sea like a board.
Conzales felt ill while facing the dive in the sea in front of the Isola Grande delle Formiche: the diver still managed to rise to the surface still conscious, according to testimonies, but his conditions worsened in a few minutes and he died without that his comrades could do something to save him.
The tragedy happened around 13.30, after the party had arrived and had moored the boat on the largest islet of Formica, where the water depth is shallow. The alarm was immediately raised to the Coast Guard and the 702 patrol boat, which left the port of Castiglione della Pescaia, reached the islets and divers in a few minutes.
Unfortunately, for the diver there was nothing more to do, and the military also found that the man had stopped breathing. The helicopter rescue Pegasus also arrived on the spot, lowering the winch and recovering the body, bringing the man's body to the morgue at the Misericordia hospital at the disposal of the magistrate who has already ordered the autopsy: it will take place on Tuesday.
