A dive buddy who believes to have suffered a type 1 hit of the skin-bends variety is also complaining of being very bloated and is noticing pronounced fatty deposit in area's were they didn't exist case prior to the diving incident. Is there any research available on physical deformities occuring whether temporary or permanent as result of dcs. Please advise.

First he has to be sure he had a cutaneous type 1 DCS.
Skin conditions can also be due to allergies (neoprene or to marine life elements)
There also might be some multiple dermatitis like coral dermatitis…

Skin DCS is characterized by :
-Cutis marmorate are patchy red-mottled areas distributed on trunk and shoulders and is intensely itchy ( pruritis )
(The clinical appearance ranges from irregular, sharply demarcated areas of erythema to violaceous and, eventually, darkly mottled macules)
-Pruritis = itching on hand chest
-Orange skin aspect of the skin due to edema secondary to lymphatic obstruction.

I am not aware if type I DCS is leaving such sequels unless there might have been some fat necrosis causing some fat irregularities. I guess this might be possible because there is always some vasculitis and vascular congestion associated with skin bends.

Dear TwoDiveFor:

I am not aware of any problems of cutaneous DCS where new fat deposits appear where there were none before. Actually, this is quite impossible, as fat cells do not grow that fast - - even with nitrogen in them.

The only connection between skin bends and diving of which I am aware is a claim that a PFO is present in some cases.

If the bloating occured after much time had passed could it be just regular old fat buildup due to less activity since the hit and same or more comfort food?

That's where my money would be.
