well, me, kelly, nate and kimber decided to go dive the f-4 today. thanks to some good numbers we dropped anchor 5 ft from the wreck. :) the mission of this dive was to determine exactly what we were diving. we were looking for a serial number to positively identify it but couldnt find one... yet. as we descended down the line i was pretty happy to see the vis was nice.(i could see kelly at about 120 and i was at 40 or 50.) from the looks of things it appears it hit the water hard. the pilots definately ejected, it looks like a bomb went off in the cockpit, plus theres no seats or canopy. the wrecks pretty mangled, but definately could tell it was a plane. the tail is gone but most everything else remains. i located some controls in the cockpit area, i hope to go back and get some better pictures of this area. it was pretty chilly at depth about 49 degrees, but my "thicksulate" made things pretty comfy. i poked around the wreck trying to find a freaking serial number or stickers on the plane. none :( but after reviewing a pictures i can see a wire in the backround with numbers on it, something to remember for next time. over all its a cool dive and the vis was nice. i was thankful it only took 20 minutes to get to our destination in the zodiac. i cant wait to return.

I looked at the pics in your gallery and if that one item in the pics is the engine face (and there is only one engine in the wreck), I'm thinking A-4 Skyhawk. "Scooters" as the A-4s are called, are relatively small for a jet. F-4 Phantoms are big, twin engined, and have a large 2-seat tandem cockpit. Does the wreck indicate a single seat, small cockpit? Another possibility is an A-7 Corsair.

Where is this wreck located?

Cheers!

Robert
