I'm planning on a 2 month visit to Indonesia in 2008. I'll probably be doing one live-aboard with Seven Seas and some other trips, but I'm wondering if anyone has advice on where to stay on-land for an extended visit? I'd prefer a cheap apartment where I could do my own cooking. Does anyone have any experience with this?

Where will you pick up/leave the Seven Seas boat from?

You can get domestic flights from Sorong or Bali to the Manado area, there is great diving there and resort based budget room accommodation (room and board for US$25 or less, rates for longer stays are negotiable in the smaller places) is available at many good places near Manado.

I recommend both Bunaken Island area,(wall diving) as well as Lembeh Straits area (great muck diving and night diving)

The people in that part of North Sulawesi are terrific, very friendly, always singing and laughing. See the other discussions for details .

Be sure to apply in advance at an Indonesia Embassy or Consulate to get the 60 day visa. You need to check in your country on the availability of that visa and any other regulations related to the country for which you have a passport for. . Normal visa on arrival is only 30 days (available for US, Canada, Most of Europe etc) (US$25 in US$ cash) and can not be renewed in country.

Some people do a visa "run" to Singapore or the Philippines, but that involves extra time and the expense of the flight etc.

Since you have plenty of time and flexibility, it will be easy to get domestic flights. Perhaps your dive operator can help you make the arrangements as it is difficult to book domestic flights from abroad and if fly Garuda domestic flight and book way in advance from abroad you will likely pay way way too much money. typically their prices will come down as it gets closer to the departure date and they see what others are charging.

Also Indonesia is very strict about the fact that you must have at least six months of validity left on your passport when you arrive!!!!

Restaurant (or dive resort food, usually include with accommodation) Food is pretty inexpensive so that there would be no reason to do your own cooking. And you don't want to be in a big city, they are crowded and hot. You want to be near the ocean or in a nice place in the mountains

Thanks a lot. Good information. I'm booked on Seven Seas for Raja Ampat in January 2009 (the first open date!). So my plans are taking shape and this is good information.

You can always check us out at Bastianos Dive Resorts (www.bastianos.com) for some diving on Bunaken Islands and Lembeh Straits.

We enjoy some great diving here with good visibility, lots of fish life and a relaxed atmosphere :-).

Maybe Derawan Island , land based diving ???? Thera are cheap place to stay at Losmen and Diving at Derawan Jetty Dive ( good Macro stuff ) sangalaki with mantas, Kakaban with Million af jelly fish and Maratua with schooling Barracudas???? al the Island you can visit with only 40 to 70 minutes time by speed boat. Diving is amazing ther you must go there and find a paradise.
for more info you can contat me at kadek112003@yahoo.com

Where do you fly to/from? If Denpasar, i suggest you explore the many regions of Bali, underwater and on land. There is so much to do, you will not get bored.
If Manado, the suggestions made by others are excellent. Manado has far fewer land adventures/activities.and transportation is more difficult.
best wishes,
cuppajoe

Thanks, and that brings up another question. I'll be flying into Bali from Bangkok and I have to be able to connect within Indonesia for my live-aboard. So where would be the best place to fly into?

So where are you join the boat?

A hint is to buy your internal air tickets using an local agent in Indonesia, I recommend a few for you if you wish (PM me) you can save a lot on airfares this way. Any problems with flights etc easier to sort out the problems rather than going back to the travel agent overseas.

Murex in Manado is a great resort Dr. Han Batuna (he was one of the first to set up diving in N Sulawesi and trained a lot of the orginal instructors up there- he was also instrumental in getting the hyperbaric chamber back online in Manado. I love the way the resort is laid out and the staff are great.

On the other side Lembeh Resort is great as well especially if you are into critters and muck

In Bali Scuba Serya resort is excellent.

However as you have a lot of time available you might want to choose to stay in the Kuta/Sanur area and use a couple of the local operators to discover the best sites on thje North and east Coast as well as Nusa Pendia...

you mighy want to email either Bali Hai Diving Bali Hai Dive Adventures: ocean's ahead or Aquamarine Bali Diving, SCUBA Dive Bali Indonesia with AquaMarine Diving Bali I know both operators and both offer excellence is service etc
