Exploring Michigan on vacation, anyone able to meet us?

Howdy fellow wreckers! We finally got our trip plans put together and I was wondering if anyone would care to join us for a dive or two or maybe even a morning water ski trip on an inland lake (we'll be pulling our boat).

Here's the basic plan:
Sat Aug 21 drive to Traverse City

Sun/Mon Aug 22/23 Manitou Island; Sleeping Bear Dunes; Petosky (there's some sort of festival there)

Tues/Wed Aug 24/25 Sault Ste. Marie

Thurs/Fri Aug 26/27 Whitefish Point; Munising; Pictured Rocks

Sat/Sun Aug 28/29 Keweenaw Peninsula

Mon/Tues Aug 30/31 driving south through Escanaba, Gladstone, Manistique and Fairport (just to see what's there)

Wed/Thurs Sept. 1/2 Mackinac Island

Fri Sept 3 drive to Alpena

Sat/Sun Sept 4/5 Dive Thunder Bay (we have already chartered a boat for this but still have room for 2 divers. PM me asap if interested in joining us)

Any suggestions on things to do and places to go are greatly appreciated. PM me if I'm going to be in your area and maybe we can meet up. This should be a fun trip!

You folks are a week or two too late!!!? Dave, Ted and I are going to Traverse City this weekend for three days of diving. Dave was raised in Traverse City and knows where all the wrecks and things are, so we are doing shore diving all weekend.

Sorry we can't meet you to dive. Just came back from a week and a half of vacation. Drove the shore of Lake Huron from Port Huron to the Straits, around the north shore of Lake Superior in Canada, Minnesota and Wisconsin as well as across the UP. Saw the copper country, visited an Iron Mine, a couple restored ghost towns, the Soo (twice) more waterfalls than I can shake a stick at, you name it. Did everything BUT go diving. Intended to go to Munising and try and walk on a boat there, but it just didn't work into the plan.

Hope you guys have a good time, and weather as good as we had on our trip...

Hi Ber,

Wow, that sounds like a real roadtrip!

There are a number of shore diving sites in Traverse City. You can read about the ones I know of on my web site:

You can also check in with the Scuba North dive shop for any more detailed information. Who knows, they may have a couple of spots open on their TC Bay charters while you are there. They also charter to the Manitou's and the Straits as well.

Ber - Sounds like a wonderful trip!

Dave - I know several years ago I did a dive a short distance from shore near Charlevoix. It was a diver memorial - lots of headstone-like 'In memory of' for SCUBA divers. There was also a large crusifix off a church underwater.

Do you know where this is? If not, I can check with some other buddies. I know my local club has a memorial there for a lost member. On our dive we were there to clean up the dive site and right the plaques that had fallen over.

Also, I know Jack (@ SCUBA North) gave me some hand drawn maps to some of the shore accessible dive sites. Do you have them? If not, I'll look through my SCUBA sites file.

Hi Paula,

I have heard of the memorial you mentioned above, but I do not remember where it is. I have never been to it.

I also do not have any maps to the TC dive sites. Just my own logbook notes, which are what I posted on my website. Creating some maps sounds just like Jack though. He was always doing that little extra for the divers that dove with him.

Man, we just postponed a trip to visit friends in Traverse City that weekend. Oh, well. Scuba North is a great rescource there as several posters said.
Also you might want to look into diving the "Keuka" in Charlevoix as you'll go very near it.
