Did you take note of what rental number was assigned to that regulator/spg package? If so and you continue to rent from that dive shop don't let them give you that regulator set again.

Or make sure they know there's a fault. Dive shop owners aren't psychic and cant fix what they don't know is broken.
I come across a lot of people who swap out broken gear only to not bother reporting it to the guide or shop meaning that gear goes out again, causes someone else problems etc. If its broken then tell someone!

I agree 100%. Most dive shops service their rental gear regularly, but due to intense useage, fault can arise in-between the designated servicing. You must tell the dive shop about any issues you experience with rental equipment.

The worst thing is where a diver encounters a gear issue, hands it back in without a word.... and then proceeds to publically denounce the shop for having bad gear. Grrrr.

Its nearly as irritating when stuff take broken kit out of circulation and just label it "broken" with no description of fault...so you're in a workshop with a BCD and a reg tagged "broken" with absolutely no idea what the fault is!

A lot of centres here have a €10 or €20 fine for people rinsing regs without a dustcap or tanks back with less than 50 bar. Ive found that very counter productive because NOW if they rinse a reg without a dustcap they just dont tell you as dont want a fine whereas if they told you immediately you could blow the reg before the SPG got damaged.

I absolutely agree with letting the shop know the equipment had problems. In my mind I was assuming that a representative of the dive shop did know about the problems because they swapped regulators for the second dive and there was an instructor along for the dive. Defiantly if the dive shop does not know about the problems I would let them know so that another person does not get faulty equipment.

A little update on this. I had a diving trip to st. marten/saba a few weeks back and of my total of 16 dives or so I had a similar issue. One time was around 60' and another was at 100' or so. I really am thinking this is mental because If I can focus on something else long enough I become ok. When it happened at 100' I got a bit chilled and I'm pretty sure my heart rate sky rocketed (Didn't have my heart rate monitor on) but at that depth I did go up about 15' but kept with the groupd just a tad above just to be safe before anything got any worse. I seemed to calm down and I slowly descended back to the depth of everyone else. The instance at 60' I just kept looking up and thinking about what I would do if my situation continued. After I saw a shark and focused on that for a bit I was ok. Kind of ironic that a shark calmed me down but this kind of proves my theory that it is mental. This was early in my dive trip and my last 10 dives or so were drama free so who knows. I'll keep an eye on this and post back if I figure anything out..

I really am getting close to getting my own reg and bcd. I'd have one if it wasn't so expensive to transport them on my trips. Two dive trips ago I had the hose to my regulator BURST! Fortunately it was during my pre dive check but I just couldn't believe it.

Unfortunately the one person who could diagnose this problem did not. You had the setup, but did not bother to look at the first, second, or tank?

We can sit here online and conjecture all night on what might have happened, but why did you not just look? One minute of diagnoses was all that was needed. Was the tank valve fully open? If we do not know the answer to that simple question every thing else is useless speculation.

Thanks for this discussion - although I was taught to check the second stage in this way prior to a dive for a problem with air delivery I hadn't really thought through what might cause a problem and how it might later show up. Some good points well explained - Thanks P

My followup post was mererly to advise you guys that the problem persisted on another dive trip w/ different equipment so it was me, not the equipment. Ever since that happened I was very dilligent in checking everything predive and the other instances recently I had this issue I'm 100% sure the equipment wasn't the issue.

So now you have diagnosed the problem you may be able to do something about it.

I do get narced, but what you are experiencing is like a dark narc. The main thing you need to remember is that nothing is wrong, this is in your head. Concentrate on breathing, deep slow breaths. Make sure you tell your buddy what may happen when you go deep. I would try and fight your way through this, but if needed go up a ways. As you gain more experience this will likely pass.

This is not a new problem, many on SB have had this issue and worked through it. Search for dark narc, or narcosis.

Great thread. Lots of good information.
