I start my Confined OW April 8th and will be doing the check-out April 22nd. A buddy of mine suggested that I get my Advanced OW the same weekend as my check-out. I was all for the idea until I spoke to another experienced diver who said I shouldn't set my expectations so high. He expressed to me that he didn't think it was a good idea for me to do the OW and the Advanced OW all on the same trip. Any thoughts on this? I know that I should go at my own pace and what feels right, but are there pros and/or cons that I should know about to obtaining both certs in the same trip?

In case you are wondering, I am doing the Confined OW in Phoenix, AZ (where I live) and the check-out in San Carlos. I plan to be in Mexico April 22 - 27.
If you will be in Mexico for five days you will likely not be diving the first or last day. You cannot do your check out and AOW - at least not PADI - in that time. It would be a violation of PADI standards. Do some recreational dives and just enjoy yourself the third day. Just make sure you are with a dive master who understands you are new.

Well...if it really is the 22-27, then that's six days to dive. (It is entirely possible to dive on the 22nd in the afternoon...OW dives 1 and 2, then dives 3 and 4 the next morning... that leaves the afternoon/evening of the 23, all day 24, 25, 26, and morning of the 27 to do AOW and/or other dives. If she really is going to be there for those days, she can get in a lot of diving.

San Carlos is a little different. They'll drive down that morning, arriving around 2pm. Hotel check in, drive to the beach, OW1 the 1st day (22nd). Day 2 (23rd) - OW2 & 3 off the boat, OW4 off the beach that afternoon. Certified. Day 3 (24th) - AOW1 & 2 off the boat, AOW3 off the beach that afternoon or night. Day 4 (25th) - AOW4 & 5 off the boat. Done - certified. Fun dives the rest of the time. In fact, the shop can now encourage to continue the instructional dives and charge for speciatlies. I wouldn't recommend the diver to do this, though. It actually probably won't go this quickly. Day 3 & 4 boat dives will probably include some fun diving because the navigation dive will most likely be off the beach. Most San Carlos trips also include a boat dive the last day - 27th - close to the marina. Get back to the hotel, shower, late checkout and drive back home to Arizona. That would make for a long week of diving, but I've done long weekends there where we dove the day we arrived and the day we left.

The drive and dive really sucks...especially from Phoenix...makes for some real long days.

In the old days we used to do the drive and dive deal. It was a 2 day trip...dive OW1 and OW2 the first afternoon... OW 3 and 4 the next morning...then drive home that afternoon. Now we do a four day trip...drive,dive,dive,drive. It's much more fun and a lot safer...and lots more time to drink! :eyebrow:

Every shop around here runs a bit different schedule but I don't know any that are doing a six day trip...unless it is a back to back trip or 2 trips that overlap. We'll do that sometimes in the summer when it gets busy.

Anyways...if Kris is going to be there as long as she says then she has plenty of time to do both OW and AOW and get in some experience dives.

I think there is an optimim time to take an AOW course. If you take it too early, you do not really have the skills or experience to fully benefit from an AOW course or fully appreceiate the finer points of the skills involved. On the other hand if you wait too long, all you are getting out of it is a patch as if you have been diving with a more experienced mentor type buddy and/or have worked to constantly improve your skills, you will have most likely acquired all the skills taught in AOW through experience.

In my case I got certified in college as they offerred PADI Open Water for one credit and PADI Advanced Open Water for a second credit. I completed both courses, but since AOW did not really mean anything at the time, I opted not the pay the extra $185 for the AOW cert. Since they were semester courses college courses they involved a lot more dives and class lecture than PADI required, but I still think AOW would have been more worth while with 25-30 dives in between.

About 1000 dives later, I discovered that I needed an AOW C-card to get me in the door for more advanced training and to offcially certify me for some of the things I was already doing. Consequently I got an SSI AOW card by picking up 5 specialties and learned absolutely nothing since I had been doing nitrox dives, night dives, deep dives, dry suit dives, wreck dives, underwater navigation, boat dives, spearfishing and underwater photography for years and was a repair technician. So they had no specialties that offerred anything new. Obviously somewhere in between 10 and 1000 dives was the optimum time to take an AOW course.

The original plan was to drive to San Carlos Friday (04/22), have Saturday, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday to do both the check-out and the AOW, then drive back to Phoenix on Wednesday (04/27). However, the DM that is going with me has to be back to Phoenix by Tuesday (04/26). Therefore, I will only have three days of diving, which means I will only be doing the check-out. I think this will be for the best, anyway. This way, I can take the advice of the majority of those that responded to this thread, and get some dives in before the AOW. Thanks for all of the great advice!!! Wish me luck!!

I just completed my AOW certification and let me tell you it's quite exhausting. I've never been so tired after a dive weekend of only 5 dives. and considering that you'll have to do your OW dives first you'll be too tired to get through the 5 advanced dives safely (none of the dives are "fun" you'll be doing drills the whole time and they introduce you to new environments and conditions). At least that is my opinion. Especially since you're still not going to be
that comfortable underwater yet.

I agree that you should wait until you have at least 20 dives. By then you've got a rather good feel of what your limitations are underwater.

yea, expectations are too high. don't go all certification crazy..
well i did way back when and now I can see that I did some of those certs too fast. At least have some 20 dives or so first.
