Just did it this past weekend. We had a pumpkin carving contest during our AOW checkout dives. It was fun but we were at Ginnie Springs in the basin, so even though it was at night vis was great and the overhead lights provided more than enough. My buddy and I did get 2nd place.

I think being underwater has a detrimental effect on the pumpkin though, ours was starting to go soft about 3-4 days after carving.

To date,... no, I haven't done it yet. The last 3yrs I have been either working or assisting with classes when the contests were available. I would eventually like to try it though.

No.....and I've never carved one above water either. Don't get the whole pumpkin carving thing.

Trick is too keep them small if you're not pre-gutting the critters, then keep the carving simplistic!

I'd be happy to instruct you Tammy! :D

was my first underwater pumpkin carving experience... the rules were pre-gut on the surface, but all actual carving to be done underwater...

after 31 minutes at 22' ... I produced my 1st placed winning creation (tho' Everybody 'won' as there were only 9 entreants and Lots of prizes so everybody got something) ; also it was my first solo dive as I dint have a buddy, tho' there were other divers in sight at the other platforms for most of the dive, I never felt unsafe , the only thing I Was concerned about was perhaps getting the 'stinkeye' for Not having a buddy, but I didnt and all was good.

Its fun an I'll think I'll do it again next year too... , except next time I hope to have my wife certed by then and be able to go as my buddy :)

I tried it once. That darn pumpkin really wants to float. Cut the top off as soon as possible. Don't bother trying to use a dive knife. Get the sharpest kitchen knife you can find and be very careful. It's crazy fun.

Your profile doesn't say where your from(unless I missed it) if your not from the United States I could see why you "don't get it' if you are from the United States then .. hmmm:shocked2:
