I am just wondering.. If you ask an experienced diver to go diving with you because you are a newbie and need some help, what are the ethics? Like do you offer to pay for their entrance fee?

I'm not sure how the others are going to respond, but I think it's going be along the lines of this:

I'll dive with someone because I enjoy their company, and they enjoy mine. If they need a more experienced diver there to dive with, and I happen to be that person, then i'm honored for anything I might be able to bring to their experience. They own me nothing else short of their company :)

I don't know that there are any "rules".

What I did, when I was new, was try to buy my buddy food or drink after the dive. Had there been an entry fee, I would have wanted to pay that, too.

Now that I'm on the other end of the equation, I don't expect anything from anybody. I volunteer to dive with new divers because I enjoy doing it. But being bought a cup of tea afterward is a nice gesture.

Good question.
When I first certed, my Instructor set me up with a couple of dives with experienced people. These weren't formal DM-assisted things, simply folks with experience willing to dive with a newbie, no $.
"Payback" has been that I, in turn, am happy to dive with new divers.

I wouldn't dream of accepting such an offer just because someone values my experience- not that I'm all THAT experienced. ;) It is always MY pleasure to dive with someone just discovering the wonders of diving.

I'd say that the answer would depend on the situation...

1> If I'm diving with a DM or Inst, I offer to pay them for showing me how to dive the situation, etc. I tried in Seattle, but the nice SB members who hosted me for a couple of days wouldn't accept.

2> If just diving with a more experienced diver as a mentor, it's a nice gesture. That's' what I did with the divers in 1 above, but I had to get a little pushy about it, as they were really nice folks to dive with. I think I was able to pay their fees on day, for a lunch each.

I'm not much of a diver, but I enjoy diving with newbies in some situations, for the joy of helping when I can, as well as watching their enthusiasm. On the last day, tho - after paying a charter fee and another day & night of expenses of being on a trip, I avoided diving with a newbie, as I was there at significant expense to see sights seen nowhere else.

Good of you to ask. :thumb: Show good attitude...

Assuming that you are talking about entrance fee to the dive area, I think it would be a nice gesture but not mandatory. Most experienced divers enjoy sharing their wealth of knowledge with people interested in bettering their skills. Lunch or post dive libations work too! ;)

Not necessary. You find someone who lives in West Jordan and say, "Hey, Art. I need a dive buddy." Although it's starting to get a tad nippy when you get out of the water just now. <grin>

PM me.

Thanks for the help! I found a new friend on SB that has offered to take me to Sea Base as soon as I get certified on the 18TH!!!! I just did not want to look like an *** and not offer something, its like someone buying you a drink, you return the favor!! Thanks for the advise!

i agree with everyone here its nice to offer but i wowuldnt do the entrence fee i would do the lunch thing i like to offer lunch to any dive buddy not just ones that are diving with me for the first time all its kind of a thing you can go back and forth with buying each other lunch
