Boy,
This thread reads like a PETA convention...........
People consume natural resources every day...........
tell the cattle ranchers in Idaho and Montana(my dad is one) that you love the endangered wolf( the ones that dont exist BUT seem to devour his beef)
The earth cycles, animal populations change....example witnessed....

wolves eat all moose....then wolves starve...then moose population grows...then wolves eat moose.....

Of course the same goes for the "Global Warming" banter that we here of now, anyone remember 25 years ago when "Global Cooling" was the banter? Oh yes,
the temps were going to get so cold that vast number of food crops would not be able to be raised.....
Ah.....Media Spin............
Next thing you guys will be saying is the PLO are Freedom Fighter and not Terrorists..............
Ah.....Media Spin............

Just a heads up.ESPN is showing the second episode of the most recent edition of the Monster shark fishing show tomorow (Tuesday 9/10 ) at 8 P.M. EST.This is the tournament that was run a few months ago.

Enjoy.

Nothing justifies this kind of cruelty. Mrjimboalaska, having consideration for others doesn't always connect with terrorism.

That isn't a complete picture. The moose don't have continued pressure from hunting when their numbers are low keeping them from growing. Endangered shark populations don't have humans starving and dieing off in large numbers to reduce the pressures on the populations.

Recent evidence shows the two go hand in hand. Warming climates melt polar ice, reducing ocean salinity and changing the path of the gulf stream. This reduces the amount of warm air brought north resulting in lower temps. It takes a lot longer periods of low temps to replace the ice caps than it takes to melt them.

hecker-the-wrecker:
Don't forget where that burger came from, or how someone had to cut down some trees so you had toilet paper, (i'm sure you don't use plastic) and just how many vegetables had to give their lives for your delicious salad??? (before i get flamed, please realize the following were examples of stuff that happens EVERY DAY right in front of us) it is a very cruel world...........................................................

Personally, I think there is a very substantial difference between killing for sport (= "pleasure"), since the fishers apparently didn't eat the sharks, and killing for food. This is in addition to the abuse of the shark that appears to have been part of the "sport."

I say this as a former hunter and spearo who has no problem with people killing animals for food. I just don't see how some can engage in it as a "sport."

Well actually if the people who caught the shark did not want it ,it is given to a charitable organization. The Oak Bluff Tournament is set up that way.If that is what you are reffering to.

BTW only one shark (of any species) per boat per day is allowed .This is a DEC law in that area.It is the same in NY ,NJ ,and CT and I believe R.I.. I know not everyone pays attention to the law.

It's like apples and oranges when it comes to comparing land based hunting and the sport of catching sharks.

It is widely accepted in the scientific community that the pressure from commercial fishing is seriously threatening the longterm survival of sharks.

On land, we do not have intensive commercial hunting operations that indiscriminantly kill large numbers of these animals that are hunted by sportsmen.

Furthermore, there are already huge expanses of land dedicated to protecting the natural habitats and migratory routes of major mammals that are hunted for sport - i.e. the protection provided by national parks.

Sharks are not provided this large scale protection, and thus we have seen drastic decreases in their populations.

Isn't it somewhat shortsighted to kill more of them when they're already being placed under such enormous pressure by others already?

As divers, I would think we are probably the demographic most affected by damage to the underwater world, and should do something about it?

One of my friends used to go on shark fishing boats in that area. He said its very common for those boat operators to bring back undersized sharks, as "any shark is a good shark".

The only shark that has a size limit in this area is mako. There is no size limit on the other sharks that are allowed to be caught.
