Pay wife and I haven been diving in several years due to becoming parents and a neck injury my wife suffered. We are planning to get back to scuba this summer, but we're wondering about our equipment. The our regs and BC's haven been serviced in about 5 years. They haven't been used at all during this time and our last dive was prior to the last service.

So my question is, will dive shops still service the equipment or do we need to buy new equipment?

Dive shops will service the regs and BCs. They will replace the critical little parts in the regs with brand-new ones. Five years is not old at all for BCs and regs. People use gear that is decades old; just requires service.

Thank you for the reply. I guess I'm wondering if there are any insurance issues that would prevent a dive shop from servicing the equipment

Just take your equipment to an authorized dealer for the brands you own and let them service them. Just make sure that you trust this dealer service. Not all dealers, especially their service departments, are created equal.

I suggest a good inspection rather than jumping into an unnecessary service. 5 years of storage under proper conditions should not result in any problems.

I would be more concerned with the untested quality of that last service than the effect of 5 years of storage under good conditions.

And ask about a refresher dive course while you are there.

Some will agree that the only regular servicing needed on a BC is that it doesn't leak, the LPI functions well and dump valve works. These are things you can test yourself. My crappy old BC was bought used 10+ years ago. The only repair I needed was to have the LPI replaced and I patched a tiny leak.

Welcome back to diving and if you are unsure of testing your regs yourselves definataly take them to a dealer to be tuned up. If they say they wont service them because they are too old but they will sell you new ones get a second opinion at another shop most regs sold in the last 20 years can be serviced and still used. I assume your regs wernt museum pieces before your 5 year break.

I would get them serviced (and most shops will happily do it) as you want to make sure that any lube hasn't dried out and that o-rings/hoses/ BCD bladder haven't perished.
