When doing an open water entry, particularly a giant stride, with a stage bottle slung on the left side what exactly is the accepted proper procedure for performing the entry?

Same as always. Step in. Use your left elbow to secure the stage bottle so it doesn't pop you in the chin on impact with the water.

Alternately, you could lower the stage on a rope or have someone hand it down to you and attach it after you hit the water.

i like doing a gentle entry with as little weight on as possible (i.e. back gas only) and then have someone hand me the bottles so i can clip them in the water

Yup...What Skull said...

Yup, on a backroll, I hold my bottle with my left hand. ;)

...and I kinda' like a sideways roll off the boat.

On a large boat, clip it off and do a giant stride.

On a small boat, clip the bottle to a lanyard and toss it overboard. Do a back roll entry and clip the bottle to your D-rings in the water.

I prefer to put the bottle on in the water.
If I decide to enter with the bottle slung, whether giant stride or back roll or otherwise, I hold the valve in my left hand and hold the bottle down/in with my left forearm. Reg is charged, valve off.

I've done giant stride and backrolls as per normal.

With a bottle on my left side generally i use the left arm across where the top of the bottle is to stop it moving up when i hit, right hand as usual across mask/reg.

(im not bothered about holiding my weight belt because i always wear it under a crotch strap).

Clip off method isnt fantastic in strong winds or rough seas. Or sites where you have to grab a shotline instantly due to current.

Entering with a small bottle already slung, I do as was already said and keep a good hand on the *valve*. I hugged the tank the first time and was enlightened.
