Could you explain more on why you dont like the gecko?
Sure, no problem.

To start with, http://www.scubaboard.com/t50322-.html but more specifically http://www.scubaboard.com/showpost.php?p=611210&postcount=23. And if you look closer you'll find that http://www.scubaboard.com/showpost.php?p=611422&postcount=25.

Similarly, http://www.scubaboard.com/t51663-.html. And while most people tend to overlook this detail it turns out that http://www.scubaboard.com/showpost.php?p=555724&postcount=5.

Does that clear things up?

Great stuff! Thanks for pulling those posts up for me, cleared lots of things up.
So there goes the idea of purchasing the Gecko, any recommendations for an entry level computer that has simulation? Is there one or I would have to go for Vyper?

The atmos ONE is the one you want. Scubatoys.com, go there and then call Larry. I believe it's only $165 there. Again, call Larry at Scubatoys.com and he will give you a great price.
I agree. Just bought an Atmos2 from Larry, great deal and even better service, PLUS WARRANTY. And at or less than the on-line sellers with no factory warranty sell them for.

The only negative on my aeris is the side button on the '2' and the shape... won't fit in my console (I don't want wrist). No problem, Larry installed the hose-mount adaptor for me prior to sending it out. And STILL beat the other's prices.

Scubatoys... my kind of toy store.

Without reading all Cornfed's links (I'm sure I read most of them the first time ), here's what I didn't like about the Gekko.
  • No similation mode. There is a plan mode that tells you the NDL minutes you'd have at a certain depth based on your current nitrogen load, but you can't calculate a dive profile with the Gekko like you can with its siblings.
  • No way to download profiles. The only electronic connection on the computer is for dive shops to be able to reset the N2 loading for rental computers. Nice for them, useless for you.
  • No backlighting, though it has some glow in the dark materials. So at depth you have to shine your dive light on the display and then it will glow for the next little while.
The Vyper is a much better Suunto computer for the money than the Gekko, but its definitely kicked you into different price range. I have the Cobra, so that tells you how highly I think of the Suunto computers. The all share the same basic algorithm. Great computers, but expensive as all get out.

You can definitely do better price-wise. The Tusa IQ-700/DiveRite Nitek Duo are also pretty conservative computers and don't have the shortcomings of the Gekko. If conservative isn't important to you, look at the Oceanic/Aeris/Sherwood/Genesis lines they are much more affordable. I know you've read this before, but if you don't have an LDS that will deal with you on a computer, call Larry at scubatoys and see what he can do for you.

Another vote for the Atmos 2. I just ordered one for me and one for my brother from Larry. Don't buy off the website. Give him a call and tell him you're from scubaboard. He beat LeisurePro's price like a red-headed stepchild and offered to walk me through setting it up and using it. Larry is a great guy and scubatoys is a great operation. If they sold stock, I'd buy it, because they're the next big thing.

This is my first computer too, and I'm not nitrox certified. Don't know if I will be any time soon, but I wanted the computer interface, and the Nitrox option is cool. Go with the Atmos 1 for a real entry comp.

Lastly, check out Aeris' website. They have a great little demo of the Atmos that pretty much sold me. You can click on the buttons of the actual comp in this Flash demo and get a feel for how it works. Very intuitive and easy to use. One cool thing is how easy it is to set the alarms so that it can act like a more conservative computer if you want. To me it makes sense to buy a liberal computer that you can set to be as conservative as you want, rather than a conservative computer that you can't make be more liberal.

In any event, call Larry at scubatoys for the best deal and the best service. The prices on their website don't reflect the reality of what they will do for you.

In essence if you don't want a computer then you could just go with something like a simple bottom timer. They are nice and I have a really cheap one left for sale. http://www.scubaboard.com/t83287-.html check it out. It is cheap and it will get him going in the right direction. Works very good as well. I dove mine this weekend and it did a superb job. I just forgot to put it into the dive mode so it didn't log the dive but it still automatically detected the water and started functioning as a bottom timer. Really nice.

I'm confused. Did you buy the Wrist model and Larry was able to mount it on a console for you?
