CAT-5 is also known to the less geeky amongst us as Ethernet cable. No offense intended; I'm as geeky as they come. ;^)
So then what do they guys call Cat 3-6, and RG-58 U? :D

RG-58 is coax cable, usually used for cable TV and cable modems, but some older Ethernet networks may still use it. I've not seen it outside of the old token ring nets around where I work and it's been a while. CAT3-6 is... well, I dunno. I guess maybe I'm not as geeky as I thought. ;^)

Ethernet has worked fine. A small caution/warning to anyone staying at El Cantil in the near future - although their site lists FREE long distance calls with Vonnage from all units, it's not provided anymore. You'll have to ask for it and then you may get it.

When we checked in and got shown to our condo I asked about the long distance calls after it was explained to us that we could make call to local land lines only. First they wanted to know how I knew about the Vonnage (well, it's on their site as a feature...) and then we were told they'd bring the router and phone up the next day. Router was brought up about 10 min later. 2 days later and still no phone. We've got cell and skype so not that big a deal. Just be aware if you expect to need to make long distance that they will tell you to come to the office and you'll be charged around $0.60/minute.

i think the vonage feature depends upon the indiviudal unit. Some units may provide this others do not. There are many owners of the units in these two condos and each unit has its own features which are offered. We have a unit which does not offer vonage http://www.elcantilcasatropical.com/index.html , it was just too much of a hassel to have it up and running. so check the individual unit specs about what you have or do not have.

The listings I read on www.elcantilcondos.com (under the "tour units" section) for the unit we are in, as well as many others, stated "Local Phone Service and Vonage Free Long Distance" We do have other phone options so it's that huge of a thing. Just wanted to point out the discepancy in case it was very important to someone else.

the el cantil web site can be confusing. you need to look at what the unit you want has to offer. many of the units in the north tower do mention the vonage connection. I believe most of the units in the south tower do not offer this. if the unit you were in advertised vonage and did not provide it then it was a mistake on their part (the units). I don't know where you stayed but i would guess it was the north unit which is just starting to get up and running. the south tower has been operating a bit longer and hopefully has more of the kinks ironed out.
