hello my name is Rick. I am studying Marine biology and need to learn to dive. On my first dive I had middle ear squeeze at 5 ft. the instuctor said "if you feel any pain don't go deeper". So I was very slow going down, and only managed to go to 12ft after 20 minutes of clearing, so slow the instructor said I would have been left behind had I not been the only student on the dive. I didn't have any sinus problem that day. My ears were plugged for days after the dive and I only got relief on the plane at 30000 feet. Are there any medical options for me like drops before diving or operation? I would really love to be able to dive.

If you weren't congested or anything your best bet would probably be to see a doctor. You may have a condition preventing you from diving.

Hi there , there are several things that can affect equalizing other than colds and congestion, one is stress or nerviousness, clamping your jaw to hald onto the mouth piece also lacks mucle near the ear which can slow equilisation, and then there is just not getting it quite right I spent my first 2 dives in the pool in some discomfort because i was just blowing a bit too gently, give it a try on dry land pinch your nose and blow if you feel your ears pop then you can equalize it takes a bit of practice. i usualy get students to do this on the surface just before desending. i would also agree that you should see a doctor but dont write diving off before you do

Welcome to the board. See the Doc. Get checked out. Good luck. Go gators!

Lots of info in our Dive Medicine forum. Our Search won't work with 3 letters words, but try ear* or just scan the titles...

It does help with discussions if you complete your Profile. And it's even more fun when you load an Avatar (personal pic for each post) and a Profile pic. See UserCP above to access these if you'd like to...? ;)

If you haven't yet, click Forums above and start going thru the list - looking for those of interest to you, especially your local dive club. Always good to try a Search before starting a new thread, tho :search: - click here for Search help, and be careful about posting Threads & Replies before reading the Sticky threads at the tops of most forums. PM me if I can help you around here..
