I just took my 83yr old father-in-law to have his ears cleaned. He assumed he was simply losing his hearing. Seems he'd been packing his ears with wax using Q-tips. Doctor was surprised he could hear at all, based on the size of the plugs he removed.

Yup! The exact same thing happened do my father in law many years ago (before I knew him) - he went to a store and they sold him hearing aids, then later had his earwax removed and didn't need them any more.

Exact thing happened to me. I have a very nice set of hearing aids now, though. Your buddy from Columbia Med School is the bomb.
