I saw this graphic on Facebook today and I thought how perfectly it applies to scuba.

I must be starting to qualify as "experienced" because I have definitely climbed Mount Stupid and my confidence has been consistently on the downsloping side of this curve for a while.
 
It definitely applies. This is one of the reasons why it's so hard for a new diver to "find a good instructor". A new diver has no way to judge what is a "good instructor" to begin with.
