don't do that. Only way to control the dump is to pinch the line right at the dump valve and pull the string while pushing against the dump itself. If you do it any other way you run the risk of having the line pop out of your fingers, and/or are pulling the wing all over the place. If you have the shoulder flexibility to pull up and out, then I guess that works, but the best way is to pinch at the dump and vent that way. Most controlled way of venting the wing.
Pulling up on the dump valve cord works just fine. I've done this in tropics and in cold water wearing dry gloves and never had the issue you're describing.

I can't for the life of me figure out what you mean by "pulling the wing all over the place". A properly sized wing only has an inch or two to travel, and even if you do move it, it pops right back into place.

I disagree with that method for dumping. You can do it that way, but I don't like it. If you want, I'll make a quick video on the way I was taught/teach it tonight to explain.

James, all over the place is if you pull straight out or down. If you pull up like the video I've seen people in thick gloves lose it if there was no pull knob on it. Drygloves I actually think are easier than 7mm neoprene gloves

Don't waste your time. I've got several higher priority issues I can come up with in my diving than relearning how to dump a wing.

I was taught the same as tbone. IIRC, the reason was so that 1) ensure dump isn't pulled out away from tanks, which means down and 2) to not put strain on dump valve, as to rip it out of the bladder.

So, either rap cord with index finger while holding down dump valve with thumb and middle finger, or hold down dump valve with thumb and index and use remaining 3 fingers and palm of hand to pull string.

Either way, whichever method is used, I think what matters is that the valve isn't pulled away from where it already is (highest point) and you don't play tug of war with it.

I just hold the string push the valve away. That works fine even with thick neoprene gloves and allows good control. I assume this is very similar to what tbone means.
