So I bought my first dive computer yesterday, a Suunto Zoop in a lovely orange color :D

I'm trying to figure out why the heck the wrist strap is so long and what do do about it. There are 20 holes in the strap. When it's fastened on my wrist the latch goes in hole number 4. I hate the thought of cutting it (I just paid $350 for the thing) but I don't think having six inches of computer/watch strap flopping around is such a good idea either. Can I buy a smaller strap?

So that it could fit me (former football player) if I bought it...and wanted to wear a 7mm wetsuit under it. There are replacement straps out there. I'd cut it, but leave some excess for thicker wetsuits.

The wrist strap is long to accommodate divers with thick exposure protection, e.g., drysuit divers, and people with Popeye forearms.

You can simply cut the band, if you feel the need to.

A few years ago, I purchased a used Suunto Vyper which uses the exact same band as the Gekko and Zoop computers. The previous owner did a very nice job of shortening the strap like I described. I think he cut the strap and then took a hot knife to it. Unfortunately, it's too short for me to use with my drysuit. The strap length works great when I'm wearing a 3mm or 7mm wetsuit.

Another option that many people like is switching over to the Deep Sea Supply elastomeric bungee mount. The bungee is depth-compensating and easy to slip over your wrists -- no buckling necessary. I have my compass mounted in a Deep Sea Supply instrument wristmount. It works great.

Enjoy the Zoop. It's a great little computer.

I have had a Suunto Vytec since 2003 and I used the original strap for a few years then realized how much of a pain in the butt the original strap was. So, I purchased a bungee mount and will never use any other strap again. Below is the link for the mount that I used. They make one for your compass too.

But, to answer your question, yes all you have to do is cut off the excess of the strap that you do not need. Make sure that you put your arm in the wetsuit and put on the glove and then put on the computer to make sure that you don't cut the strap to short. Hope this helps.
