Well after much reading I'm planning on pulling the trigger on a DSS Hog Rig with the LCD. I just don't know if I should go for the 30 or 40 lb lift. What factors should one consider when making the decision. I'm sure Tobin will chime in with his usual excellent advise but all are welcome. Thanks guy/gals.

Have you looked at the torus wing from DSS. Tobin will do the hog singles rig with the Torus 26 or 35 and the wing is a donut instead of a horseshoe. I got the Torus 26 SS BP rig and I love it for warm and cold water it is a great rig. Things to consider would be what temperature the water is that you are diving in. If you primarily dive in cold water then I might go with the 35 though if you don't need much weight you will be fine in the 26 in cold or warm water. I am :) . You need to figure out lift requirement so that when your wetsuit is fully compressed and you have nearly a full tank of air and your weight on you will have enough lift to stay neutral. If you have any specific questions about the DSS torus 26 with hog harness I'd be glad to answer them either by pm or on this thread.

I purchased the SS BP, Hog harness and 30 lb LCD wing last April. I love it. It is an exceptional rig. For my diving the 30 lbs of lift is more than sufficient. I have a hard time thinking of a situation where a single tank rig would require 40 lbs of lift. I'm sure there are some, but none come to mind. That's a lot of lift for single tank diving. 30 lbs should be sufficient for the vast majority of situations. I've been very pleased with my decision.

Matthew,

Who needs a 40 lbs singles wing? Not many, but if your are a large person wearing lots of neoprene (cold water) then a 30 lbs wing may not be enough to offset the compression of all that neo.

For cold water it's almost always your exposure suit that governs the size of the required wing.

How buoyant is your exposure suit?

Most of the time it will probably 3 mil or less but in deep winter a farmer john/jacket 6.5mm. But only for a few months I think. I'm not overly tall but I can be kinda dense as I average between 175-200 ish with little body fat (usually ;) ) depending on my cycle and I'm 5' 7". Dunno if that constitutes large though. Thanks for the help.

Hi Matthew,

Maybe my experience will help since the measurements you give are exactly like mine; i'm also 5'7" and i also fluctuate quite a bit in weight depending on what type of weight training i do (i assume you mean something similar by "cycle", no?), usually 170-190.

I have the LCD 30 and SS plate, i've used it with a 3mm and a 5mm, with steel and aluminum tanks and i've had ample lift in all situations. Playing with that calculator linked above, the highest result it has given me in terms of lift required is about 20 lbs, even though the suggestions on lead are much higher than what i actually use. I'm mentioning this since it may also be applicable to you because of low body fat, but of course, no two people are exactly alike so take that with a grain of salt.

If i was to buy my rig from scratch, i'd buy the Torus 26.

Hope this helps.

I'd go with the 30. I've got one and it's plenty of lift for any singles diving I might do whether I'm in a bathing suit or my drysuit. I considered the Torus but for me the extra lift at the waist that it is designed to provide was not necessary. I'm just itching to get my double 95's together so I can throw my LCD 50 on. Hopefully after this weekend I'll get them used up and taken to the shop for O2 cleaning and then band em up.

Ditto on the 30 ... I'm a large (250#) person who dives LP95 or 119 steel cylinders in a drysuit, and the LCD30 was sufficient for me. Comparing that to your stats, I'd say a 30 will be all the wing you need.

PS - I like the LCD30, but I LOVE the Torus 36 ... :D
