Right. Let me clarify just to make sure what I'm saying is understood:

Generally it's best to run it behind the wing -- especially with horseshoe wings. Since the air bladder doesn't extend down towards your butt, the long hose can run behind the wing without issue -- the physical design of the air cell allows this, and having the hose run behind the wing won't trap air.

If you dive a donut wing (Halcyon Evolve, DSS Torus, Agir Niord, etc) it might be best to run the long hose in front of the wing. If you run it behind the wing and the hose is a bit tight, you could crimp the wing and impede gas flow from one side to the other -- effectively canceling out the point of having a donut wing. This is easier seen than explained on the internet. :)

As to the hose-protector issue...I don't use them. I find it's better to have the hoses open to the environment, allowing easy inspection for cracks or other issues.

Do folks typically keep the hose protectors on? I've heard differing opinions.

Tom

None for me and never a busted hose on a backgas or stage reg. I have busted an LP hose on my argon bottle - I tend to sit on the hose sometimes and eventually crimp it.

Run the backup under the corrugated hose. With AL 80s route the hoses behind the wing when using APEX. There is not enough room with 80s to really do it the other way properly without really stuffing the wing in between the two. With larger steel tanks, in front of the wing works best.

Run the backup under the corrugated hose. .

Thanks for this tip! I've been diving the DS4s for a year now and was never happy with the bend in my backup when routed behind the wings. Running it forward opens it up quite a bit. I found dropping my bands slightly (1/4") also helped without affecting balance.
