Hello Scubaboard friends (feel like we're friends already!)! Long lime lurker here, first time poster.

I have a somewhat unique question that some of you experienced in the NYC area may be able to help: I have a neoprene drysuit that I haven't used in over 5 years because I hated the massive clown rock boots. I have now removed such hated boots ahead of a trip to the Azores, and I'm looking for a local dive spot to get my skills back in shape (think adding air into the drysuit and not corking up, checking if the new socks are better for buoyancy, etc.). Doesn't need to be anything special, just somewhere a little calm and within 1-2h of downtown NYC with an easy entry and low currents so we can do some drills.

We haven't done any local dives before, the drysuit experience is limited to San Diego and recent dives have been with wetsuits only (although some could be considered cold water). I understand Lake Hydra needs an instructor, Willow Springs is a little too far for a day trip (5h in total for us) and most places in NJ can have strong currents and boat traffic. Is my understanding correct? Any recommendations would be much appreciated!

Cove Island park in Stamford is within your specified distance, without much current, its a beach entry with a bit of a long approach from the parking lot so its best to have a cart to tote your gear. Another place in Stamford is out near Shippan point...there is a small private beach at the end of Lanark Rd that drops off and deepens quickly hence the boat moorings just off the beach, that would be a good walk in entery with very close access from the road. I had relatives that used to live around the corner and I would launch my sunfish sailboat from there all the time...no one ever batted an eye about me using the beach and those that I occasionally spoke to were totally cool with it. I wouldn't be surprised if you had similar experience if you venture there.

Another spot within your specified time/distance, out past New Paltz is Lake Minnewaska...not the most exciting diving as there isn't much to see in the lake, but there is no current and provide an opportunity to work on your drysuit skills.
