They also substantially degrade the plastics used in reg and bcd manufacture and rubber.

Salt chlorination uses an electric charge that also degrades.

Salt also bleaches.
 
After a very bad experience with a shock loaded pool, I never enter a pool without using a pool chemical test kit to make sure chemical levels are at a legal level.

I know some rinses exist which neutralize chlorine and might be worth the effort.
