just wondering how much I should expect to spend for just a basic drysuit nothing to crazy

A grand new. Maybe as low as $700-$800 depending on the suit.

A good used suit will run about $400-500, but will probably need some repair work (seals replaced) on top of that.

At least, those have been my findings over the past few months scouring different websites and ebay. My LDS offers pretty basic dry suits starting out at like 1500 or something really crazy like that... online is definatly the way to go here in my opinion. Either that, or at least a different LDS than mine.

Just too many variables here to give a reasonable answer (new/used, neoprene/trilam, maker, accessories, etc). Anything more specific would be really helpful. Where will you be diving? In what water temps?

For a middle of the road new suit, $1500 is about right (not sure where you're seeing a ton of decent suits for $700-800; to me, that's the lowest end). A used suit, depending on wear, might be the way to go (that's what I did; paid $600, no need for seal or zipper replacements). Suits can easily get up to (and past) $3000. If I had more money (poor grad student), I'd have bought a DR 905 (around $1600 when I was looking).

i was pricing TLS 350's, and you can get them used for around $1,000

new (but barebones) for about $1,500

new with pockets, p-valves, etc., around $1,800

and custom for about $2,400

these are going to be your top prices (DUI are pricey)

Yea man prices can really go all over the place, find someplace with a good warranty, and above all try on the suit before you buy it. And just FYI if you are ruff on your gear zip seals go a long way.

Bare has a nex-gen drysuit for around $800 that dries quickly, is durable, and will certainly service the needs of a new drysuit diver.

Check out the Apollo 4.0 EX drysuit. Can be had for <$1000 and works great from my experience and was reasonably priced. Doesn't mean the more expensive suits aren't great (and probably better in ways I don't understand yet) but it fits my needs and budget and keeps me toasty in the Pacific NW waters.

My buddy has one of the real bargain basement drysuits and has some sort of drysuit malfunction on virtually every dive. Some of the leaks and issues are his doing, no doubt, but it feels like he works really hard to stay dry (and usually doesn't anyway ;)).

YMMV.

One note on buying a drysuit, get one that is repairable. I have learnt that not all suits are repairable.

(I just did my first fix on mine for a small hole in the neck seal)

I looked at a few online sites for their lowest prices on what was still deamed a "drysuit", saw a bunch of bare nex-gen drysuits. ;)

My LDS was offering low end for $1500, and some decent ones for well over $2k. Wasn't interested.

My buddy recently spent $450 on a used viking vulcanized rubber suit, and another $600 on new seals and zippers... ended up with a great suit for around $1000.

It all completely depends on what you want and the route you wanna go, there's a wide range, but for a grand I think you could swing something that'll hold you over for quite awhile in most types of diving.
