Thanks to everyone for the great information. Our only concern now is the weather. The forecast for Saturday is 88 degrees, 40% chance of storms, and 20 mph winds from the East-southeast. The marine forecast is:
"Southeast winds near 15 knots and gusty. Seas beyond the reef 3 to 5 feet. Seas inside the reef around 2 feet. Nearshore waters a moderate chop to choppy. Scattered showers and thunderstorms."

Will those winds and waves make the boat ride out there be miserable, and will they wreck the snorkeling? Thanks!

It's south FL, so there are always scattered thunderstorms. The seas don't sound too bad to me but it depends on what your definition of bad is. Sorry to be vague but it's really a personal decision. As far as the snorkeling, the fort is huge and if the seas are up on one side, it will be calm on the other.
