Do you have to have special training to use a dry suit? I'm trying to think of some way of not freezing my butt off when I do my AOW dives this month. The lake is going to be VERY cold and I know my 3m equipment won't cut it.

You need to have some form of training when using a drysuit, whether that training is formal or informal--well, that's a whole different discussion. You probably wouldn't be able to rent a drysuit without a drysuit certification card so mixdiver's suggestion of making the drysuit dive one of your AOW dives is a good one. Otherwise just rent a 7mm suit, it's really not that expensive.

Do you HAVE to ??? No. But it would be wise.

David, I have dove Laurel Lake serval times,I think this is where you will do your AOW class. If you rent a 5 or 7mm suit and hood and gloves you will be just fine. After your deep dive, you can use you 3mm suit and be fine. If you have any questions PM me and I will be glad to help any way I can. Hope to see you at Joe's next weekend.

I found a really nice Akona 7mm wet suit for $285 minus my 10% discount. Scuba Diving Magazine gave it the editor's choice award and best buy award in a recent 7mm comparison. I'm thinking I may buy that, I've got 5mm boots and gloves now too and the hood I have right now is 3/5mm I think. I think that should be sufficient enough to keep me warm.

I'm trying to decide on what my 3 electives are going to be. Neil, my instructor, wants me to do DPV, night, and search and recovery for my 3 electives. I'm fine with Night Diver and Search and Recovery but I'm not really interested in DPV. I was thinking of switching it out for Multi-Level and Computer Diving or Peak performance Bouyancy. Any suggestions?

Go for the Peak Performance Buoyancy. That's the one that will probably be the most beneficial to the rest of your diving career.

Do the DPV you will be interested in doing it after taking a ride on one. Every time I get to use one it is a blast!!!!
