You do need to learn how to use a DS, you can either bust right through it and take the class, or find an experienced buddy and invest a couple easy dives, personally, I went to DUI Demo Days twice a year or two ago, did 4 dives in a suit with DS instructors in the water and about a month ago I did my longest cave dive yet in a somewhat poorly fitting DS (with completely different equipment from my Demo Days!), so it can be done.

When you get one that you are comfortable in, lets go dive, might not have to freeze our backsides off on the SI in wetsuits anymore ;)

I dunno, I keep going back and forth with the idea... they are nice and warm, but that's a lot of money and I don't really get THAT cold on the dives. If I came across one at a steal I would, but then I have the sizing problem... who knows!

Oh i thought you had one for a moment, not just borrowing/renting. Its not cheap, but what is in diving (ok, there are cheap things - snorkel, zip ties, whistle, de-fog etc)? Yes i can imagine you being a problematic size/shape, more so than me! I think we both got cold at Peacock that day, no longer a problem for me, just trying to nail this sucker in the mean time ;)

You should try it sometime, very invigorating diving a 1mm/skin in the middle of summer and still being warm ;) We do need DS's for caves and the gulf in the winter time though! I am really enjoying mine after the earlier frustration, just need to actually get out diving more often than a couple every weekend, then i would be happier.

I got a chance to try a drysuit in my advance open water class. But That was only a few dives.

Where i got real experience was diving with experienced DS divers. Spent a whole summer in a rented suit, bought mine in the fall. I should have done it much sooner. I agree with other posts that a DVD is kind of worthless, experience in a suit is the best way i have found.

See if your LDS will rent you one to get some experience. Pool work is ok but you need real dives to get real experience.

Makes you sick, they call warm water cold and actually get something called "vis" as well.

Disgusting!

Vis... please define that? Oh yeah, that is when I can see 10 ft. in front of me!

Oh and drysuit optional? Not up here. The last shore diving I went on involved 3-4 inches of snow and two inches of ice on the ground!

:)

You forgot to add "And that was in the middle of a heatwave in the summer you WWW!" ;)

BTW 10ft isnt bad viz to a lot of people, myself included, its when it get <1ft i start to get a little bored, at 1-2" i start to just stick my arms out and hope ;)
