Hi All,

I just dove some new dry gloves yesterday. I opted for dry gloves with latex writst seals. Loved them except, the straws dug into my wrists and were uncomfortable. I have done some searching and found dirdiver.com that had a good idea using cut off socks for equalization. I think I will try that. But I also wanted to see if any of you are using this style of glove and what you are using for equalization.

Also, any tips for getting those suckers on? It was about 80 degrees yesterday, and I broke into a full sweat trying to get the damn things on properly. There's gotta be a better way.

Thanks,

Hunter

You're talking about a ringless system like the Nordic Blue gloves? I've heard they're difficult to get on by yourself. Peter Steinhoff has a page on donning them here which might help.

I don't use socks to equalize my drygloves, or straws. I use a short piece of heavy bungie cord. Flexible, cheap and readily replaced when I lose them (which I do all too frequently), and they work fine.

I tried using dry gloves before, and I had the same issues you mentioned. When I finally bucked up for the dry suit, I got the DUI dry suit, with the zip seals on my dry gloves. Its been a piece of cake since then.

Take some telephone wire - cut it into 3" chunks pull the three wires out of the cover and you will have a soft non collapsible straw that is free (everyone has old telephone cable lying around don't they) and works perfectly. Takes 5 minutes to make 10 or so.

However, I have forgotten to use straws many times and no big deal.

That's true -- I rarely even bother unless I'm going deeper than 60 or 70 feet, and the other day we went to 96 and I never noticed the glove squeeze. I think it was one of Uncle Pug's posts that first suggested that tubes might not be absolutely necessary.

I don't use anything. With thick enough inner gloves, the "shrink-wrap" effect is actually nice. I get added dexterity and stay dry and warm.

Thanks everyone. I wasn't sure if the equalization was necessary either. I went down to about 60 in them and the squeeze was actaully nice. I have small hands and finding gloves that fit well is always a challenge. The squeeze helps.

I gave up on the straws, instead on my undergarments is a thumb loop to hold the sleeves in place while I don the drysuit. I just leave the thumb loop pulled through the wrist seal and it works very well.

But what if your glove floods? How do you reclose the seal?

What I've heard is that such a small amount of fabric will only seep water and isn't a big deal. Alternatively, you can take the glove off and stuff the fabric back under the seal. I don't use this approach, so I don't know from personal experience.

One of the reasons I thought about the Nordic Blue gloves in the first place was because they came in small. But in fact, the orange Atlas gloves in a medium are a perfect fit over my liners, and are very easy to install on my Viking rings, and also cheap. I'm kind of tempted to get some wrist seals and put them on a pair of orange gloves, to see if I can make my own "Nordic Blue equivalents" and see how I like them, though.
