Man Found Floating Unconscious In Detroit River Suspected Of Underwater Drug Trafficking Between Canada-US
A Canadian man suspected of being an underwater drug smuggler was nabbed by police when he was discovered unconscious in the Detroit River with 300 pounds of marijuana tied to his body.
The long, twisting tale begins when Glen Mousseau, 49, of Windsor, Ontario, Canada, was stopped driving a U-Haul in St. Clair County with $97,000 cash on May 10, per FOX 2.
Police said that Mousseau reported he illegally had entered the U.S. from Canada and admitted he runs a drug smuggling operation between the two countries. He also admitted to moving marijuana, cocaine, or cash roughly seven times in the past, police said. His operation involved a submersible watercraft on the Detroit River, police said.
Per a federal affidavit, Mousseau was released to the Baymont Hotel in Flat Rock as they investigated. On May 21 Mousseau allegedly contacted Homeland Security to say a multiple kilogram shipment of methamphetamine would be arriving in Detroit the next day.
At 6 a.m. on May 22, Mousseau was spotted leaving the hotel and cut off regular contact with Homeland Security agents, they said. Searching the hotel, they allegedly found five cell phones, a laptop, and a dry suit for scuba diving in the cold.
But Mousseau was in the wind -- gone -- until June 5 when Border Patrol Agents said they found a man, later identified as Mousseau, floating unconscious in the water.
He was pulled from the waves and agents determined he was tied to two bundles of marijuana, weighing 265 pounds, with a tow strap.
Federal agents said he's currently being held in a federal custody on possession with intent to distribute marijuana, bulk cash smuggling, and illegal entry to the U.S.
