Drift Diving West Palm Beach

Go - Go Dancers!?! What is that? Dude, you must be OLD! Isn't that like way back in the hippy days of the sixties? Did cars still have those big fins on them and you REALLY had to get off the couch to change the channel???

Planning on diving off WPB I know its drift diving, but what does that mean exactly. I am newly cert PADI OW. I just bought the Sony Marine pack for my P100 camera, will I be able to "practice" with it on a drift dive or does the current take you so fast you really dont have time. Do I need special training to dive off WPB, would I be better diving somewhere else to try my new camera set up. I will be in Orlando, but will drive to treasure coast or similar for a dive opportunity.

I was just recently in Cozumel, and tried out my digital camera for the first time. All the dives were drift dives, got 500+ pictures. The only drawback to drift diving and
photography, is that you can't take multiple shots of the same subject..other than that I was quite pleased with the photos.

Technically the type of dive that is being discussed here is a float dive. But everyone calls it a drift dive. Not quite the same, but close enough for this discussion. They are fun and safe dives assuming you stay with the group. The DM has a float or a dive flag. The boat follows the float or dive flag. When you come up, the boat is there waiting for you. If the boat has a fan tail, you belly flop onto the fan tail (not pretty, but it gets the job done) to get on the boat. If the boat has a ladder, grab the bottom rung and stiff arm it to keep from getting beat in the face with the ladder. Reach down and pull one fin off hold it between your legs and then loop it over your wrist (assuming you have fin straps, if not, then hand the fin to the guy on the boat), then stiff arm the ladder with the hand that has the fin. Reach down and take the other fin off and loop it over your wrist. Climb the ladder. Works great, and sometimes you get amazing viz off the WPB area. Good luck and have fun.

There are several boats in this marina and other local marina's - but after dealing with most of them over the past years, I've pretty much settled on dealing ONLY with Narcosis.
