I am planning on getting doubles (2x12l steel Eurocylinder) and was wondering if my rec wing is big enough for these tanks? The shop obviously wants to sell me another wing (DR classic wing that is), would that be a better suited wing?

When I was researching my BP/W setup, I found the single tank wing is designed for single tanks and the double wing is designed for doubles.

I do not have specific experience with the Rec wing you have, but, if it is designed for singles, then the answer to your question would be no. Conversely, using a doubles wing on a single tank would cause the wing to wrap around the tank.

Consequently, to all my research, I have a singles wing because that is what I dive for now and will get a setup for doubles in the future.

I don't know how your cylinders compare weight wise... But my doubles are Faber HP100's... around 14lbs negative full... 8 lbs negative empty. Add in a 6 lb s/s backplate, etc and the fact that the RecWing dosn't fully inflate due to the plate restriction, and the RecWing sunk when fully inflated.

I've swapped it out for the Classic Wing and given up on the idea of a one size fits all wing. I've yet to perform the same test on the Classic.

If your cylinders are comperable to the PST's - or LP fabers which are around 8lbs negative full, ~ neutral empty you should be ok... Its just with mine - the fabers are wickedly heavy.

Tim pointed out the largest problem, the rec wing is fairly skinny in design (being a compromise one size does all singles/doubles wing). This means the wing gets compressed between the tanks and the backplate and does not have room to fully inflate.

It works well on small 6.7-6.9" diameter tanks and also works well on relatively bouyant tanks like most AL 80's where a lot of lift is not required. But anything larger in diameter or more negative in bouyancy starts to limit it's lift capacity at the same time the lift demands increase.

If you are going to use the wing solely for doubles, go with the classic wing. The 7-8 extra pounds of rated lift is not a big deal but the wider design of the classic wing is a key factor in being able to actually get all of the rated lift out of the wing.

I dive DR RecWing with 2x12l steel tanks (Faber), SS backplate and AL deco cylinder. It can be fully inflated. However, DR classic (and other doubles only) wing is better suited for diving doubles.

I use it sometimes for diving single 15l steel tank and it works - big taco, not streamlined but it works if I don't have single tank wing.

P.S. Of course, get rid of bungie (gusset control).
