I had a good chuckle to myself thinking about how much importance we place on ascending from depth at 30 fpm or less with the last 20 feet being a mere crawl...

versus

The olympic downhills skiiers who are covering 3000 verticle feet in 90 seconds.



(I realize that it's relative to the density of the medium (air vs. water), but the contrast was too interesting to pass up.)
 
the judges (who would be all pruney from having to sit in the water all that time) would be looking to see who was ascending faster than the bubbles!

It would never work - where could they light that torch?

3000' of altitude at typical downhill ski course altitudes is equivalent to about three feet of water pressure, so an equivalent rate of descent would be 2 feet per minute.
Pretty slow.
