For those that use or used a wing with 40 lbs of lift. What did you have on your dive? For example, dual lp85's with drysuit and canister light with a deco bottle.
Deciding between a 40 and a 55.

Twin 80s wet, generally with a 10w can light.

Double 80's w/stage and can light all aluminum the 40 works fine wet or dry for me and most of my students once I go to steel I use a 50-55lb.

Go with the 55. With 100+ cu ft steel doubles, a stage and a deco bottle or two plus a cannister light, a 40 pound wing would be pretty hard pressed. And if the wing is pinched a bit between the tanks and plate, you won't get the full rated lift anyway.

Another vote for the 55#, especially with steel. I was diving a single HP100 and the 40 was more than enough. When I doubled them up it was kind of like a VW Bug (the original version) trying to pull an Airstream uphill. Got a 51# and life is good again! :D

but what if it's 2 lp85's on a SS plate with a deco bottle. No can light. Is 40 not enough?

I dive dry with double LP85s, SS plate, one stage bottle and a can light with my 40# wing. It's spot on. Any more gear though, I'd opt for a larger wing.

I used an Evolve 40 with HP100's and it worked fine. Traded up to a DSS 49 for the 119's, and an Evolve 60 when I started carrying deco bottles.

I dive dry with double 85's and a can light -- no stages or deco bottles. My 40 lb wing does me fine.

I use an Evolve 40 for 14L steel doubles, 9 canister, SS backplate, and alu stages with no problem. The 40 is slick and makes little drag.
