So really, you've got yourself a 80 cf pony bottle with no secondary 2nd stage on your primary. Seems like a lot of extra gas to carry.

I would rather err on the side of too much air.

I utilize independent first and second stages on each tank.

Seems like the PITA statements about independent doubles are not well founded, IMO

So if you have a failure, you terminate the dive? Or keep going?

And if you do terminate, you need 80 cf to get back? Vs. slinging a 40 cf say?

NEED 80 cf to get back?; probably not, but nice to have too much air, than too little. If someone else if having a problem there is an abundance of air even at depth.

Choice to extend bottom time within no deco limits? Sure!

Why would independent doubles be a PITA?'

My rig: Necklace mounted back-up regulator always ready on a redundant 80 cf tank.

Plan dive for 1 tank, with 80 cf as back up/emergencies.

This skips problems with the manifold, and valve isolation drills.

Be aware that this 'redundant 80cft tank' can be a downfall.... it is attached to your neck. Any problem (yourself or your buddy) and you could be struggling to (re)move that weight, hoses could entangle........... if you do not need 80cf to go to the surface (which is a LOT of gas to go to the surface), bring less.....

I agree with carrying spare gas in whatever configuration you feel you need, just be aware of HOW you carry it and how MUCH of it. Too much can be too much to handle. Bring what you need, not what you want so to speak
